I've seen a lot of different solutions but what is the best performing ignition for a 2f

I've heard a big cap distrib and a dented side cover is a good setup

how about it --is there one youre glad you installed or one you wish you hadn't

does it make a diff if you desmog or not which one you would choose?

ttt

anyone else?

All I remembered was big cap distrib now I know I can get it from a 60--cool

I've run a '79 2F electronic ignition distributor and coil for many years in my '75 2F. It was one of the better upgrades I've made. I always needed to replace or adjust points at the most inconvenient times before I swapped. It is basically the same swap as using the large cap FJ60 distributor, but the '78 - '80 models were small cap design, therefore you don't need to change the side cover.

Details about the wiring can be found in this old post over at Pirate:

Swapping a Toyota electronic distributor into an earlier model (Long Tech) - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

I decided on using the Toyota electronic ignition because it works as well or better than other HEI ignitions, dropped in without any modifications, is curved properly for the 2F and doesn't cost an arm and a leg like the DUI system.

Fj60 Large Cap.

an hei is a hot set up. but it's not really a drop in deal.
the big cap is just as good as the hei, but uses all toyota parts.
the non-usa with pertronics is a slick deal, but would run third on teh list.
i'm currently running an hei, it's one hell of an improvement over points.
i also have the non usa and and big cap setups.
teh plan was to run through them, just to see.
8 years later and the hei is still in.

I'm running a DUI setup and have been very pleased. I am running at about 17 degrees advance timing.

As long as they work properly, they are all about the same performance wise. You gain more performance by tuning it up than by swapping distributors on a properly tuned engine.

YMMV if it is not properly tuned.

Dizzy

I'm running the same set up as Shipwreck. The small cap '79 fully electronic one. Love it. Originally had a '79 Fj40 which my brother now has. After I picked up my '77 it was one of the first mods I did. Noticeable difference.

I picked up a dizzy for my 1975 fj40 it has pertroix ignitor and a plastic cap that you can unscrew and has I and R and these dizzy looks new.Any ideas what I have because it looks the same size as my stock dizzy.

My vote is going to be for small cap 1977 with Pertronix. Fits all the year models, no dented side pan necessary, has vacuum advance, probably has 32 degrees mechanical (requires less static timing be cranked-in, so idles down better in the rocks), and don't have to worry about constantly replacing a pricey Toyota igniter.

The best is Original Toyota Distributor, with a
Porter Electronic Module.
It's cheap and ready to install.

I have a complete Jacobs electronic package with a mallory dual point distributor firing my 78 and I have been very pleased with the setup.

Another vote for FJ60 large cap. Running great in my 76 2F.

Downey-I'm sure the ignitors can go bad, but my I've never had a bit of trouble with any of mine in the 25 years I've been driving Toyotas with ignitors. The one in my FJ 60 is original and going strong at 220K. They can't be that bad!

79 2f

Here is a 79 2f I am getting to install in my 71, if I squint I can make out the dizzy in the pic but it is a small cap and probably the original cause it only has 88k miles on it.

If the 79 is electronic then I might as well go with that eh? Unless it fails.

Unless you have X-ray vision, you could not possibly see the dizzy in that pic......possibly a vacuum valve....no dizzy;)

Dizzy is on the other side of the engine so not visible.
