I did my PHH a year or so ago and i think the hardest part was getting the old OEM hose clamp off with pliers. Now i am doing my head gasket so i will have the PHH off again. It has me thinking about what type of clamp is the best to use. It is a two part question. What hose clamp does the best job of "clamping"? What type of hose clamp and what orientation of it is the easiest to remove during a PHH service? I dont want to put a clamp on there that is impossible to get off in the event of a trail repair. As we know it is really hard to get you hand back there.
 
I used a metal twist tie that comes on the loaf of bread.
Japanese bread would be ideal.

If you want to get spendy, Napa sells constant tension.
Believe the name is Breeze.
 
Breeze constant torque is what you want. Get the part number for the diameter you want on their website. Also make sure you get stainless and sleeved or whatever they call it for use with silicone hoses.
 
Just for information, I replaced my PHH around 10 years ago with silicone hose and regular worm drive stainless clamps. It's been fine. I am going to inspect it this weekend as I am getting ready for easter jeep safari in Moab.

Installed mine at 111,111 miles

PHH, Starter Contacts and Coolant Flush DONE!!!

Pulled the head for a valve job at 405,xxx and the Samco silicone hose as well as the breeze clamps were like new :)

I could've reused them, but I bypassed the rear heater and picked up all new hoses and clamps.
 
I used the phh fhh kit with constant torque.I like the clamps the idea of them but they can be a bit of a pain in tight spaces to use.
 
For rubber hoses breeze's constant torque clamp is top of line but really any worm screw clamp would do, just don't over tighten it.

For silicon you need clamp that's fully lined inner or smooth inner surface because silicon is a lot softer than rubber and will get cut by the exposed sharp edges especially if tighten it too much. Again don't over torque it and you will be fine.

Another reason for constant torque clamp is the springs makes it harder for people to over tighten.
 
I used gates green stripe and elastomeric clamps. I had my head off so using a heat gun to shrink the clamps was a nonissue.

Mine have only seen a few months of use but so far, so good. They shrink and expand with the hose. I bought mine from Duiser $20 for hose and clamps.

FWIW my local NAPA stores now sell the Chinese rip-off of the Breeze Clamps, McMaster Carr sells the real deal, so it helps to check the part before you pays your money.

Yup! Rubber reacts and expand with heat. Silicon is inert to heat and does not expand so constant torque clamp is actually over kill for silicon hoses. The constant torque clamp is designed for large industrial hoses so either way it's over kill for both rubber and silicon hoses. Toyota never used a single constant torque clamp ever and some how they still reign as most reliable cars in the world, the mystery is killing me! :hillbilly:
 
I just went to the boneyard and just picked up a bunch of the Toyota spring clamps. They work great and are easy to install with needlenose visegrips.
 
I used the NAPA constant torque clamps the first time I did my PHH, but when I did it last time they were out of stock. So I used a fully-lined worm-drive clamp for my silicone hose, and 5,000 miles later no issues. I orient the clamp such that the worm drive "head" is facing forward and i can get a 1/4 drive ratchet on it. As you are doing the head gasket, now is a good time to make sure the bolts that hold the metal PHH tube in place are loosened or removed. This makes it much easier to shift the metal tube around to slide the PHH on. More advice on this on various PHH threads.
