Daycare was closed for an extra day after the 4th so I took the day off to watch the kids. My oldest wanted to wash a car, so the 40 got volunteered while the youngest was napping.

She did ask me the other night if I could buy a “rusty beetle car so she could fix it with me” so I think I’m off to a good start

Air-cooled VW + 40 is a pretty decent 2 car setup to be fair.

I‘ve kicked this same can down the road for 20yrs…

My mother and father bought their 1st “new car” in 1963, a Red VW Bug. In the day, you could build one out of the JC Whitney catalogue.

Simple, easy to work on, semi indestructible with a crappy heater. I think that’s why TLC owners should own one.

I think the VW Beetle appeals to a lot of us 40 drivers as it embodies the same spirit of freedom and simplicity only found in an older vehicle. I had a couple in the early 90s; they were fun, gas mileage was amazing and they were cheap to fix back then. Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold them but they paved the way to my Toyota addiction.

Installed new OEM small cap points distributor 19100-60010 with my restored 89620-60010 Igniter Assembly. Timed to 12 degrees BTDC. I’m very pleased with the performance. It has more power and acceleration than my previous electronic points (CDI Porter).

Nearly finished with some major engine work on my ‘79 FJ40. Completely rebuilt head, carb, desmog fixes, new vacuum bits and belt drive (air pump idler kit and desmog parts from Jim C, excellent kits).

Lots of work but nearly done and runs like an absolute champion now, well worth the time and effort and cash.

My boys @Cowboy45 (16) and @SipLife (19) built a fan shroud for Hades (green 1972 FST). It had an electric fan set up that was just not suited for Texas. We busted butt in the barn at 110F to knock it out. New to SBCs, as are the boys. Initial mechanical fan purchase was counter clockwise based. Clutch and fan need to be clockwise for vbelt SBC. Take 2 fixed that. Tested it at 105F ambient and 75 mph. Needle stayed put at dead center. PO had electrical set up which was plain inadequate. Nothing beats a well designed mechanical fan, thermal fan clutch and shroud. @Cowboy45 will be driving this to SAS6 from DFW to Ouray, CO this year. @SipLife will also be taking his recent build (1973 horizontal blue FJ40 with LS/h55/splitcase) to SAS6 as well. Heading to AR this weekend to stretch their legs and learn some trail riding skills.

It’s been a good journey with the boys this far.

First car was a free 68 bug. Went through several over the years, last was a complete, original, driver 57. Definite similarities (simplicity wise) with an early 40.

Just curious what fan/clutch setup you ultimately went with. I have a SBC - I set it up with a rigid-mounted (clutchless) 18” fan and a shroud and it cools well enough for a hot day in MD. If I get stuck in traffic on a 90-degree+ day, temperatures start pushing 215-220ish which makes me a bit nervous. Someday I want to redo my shroud and maybe switch to a clutch fan so I can hear myself think above 60mph…plus if it winds up cooling a little better, that’ll be a bonus!

Have the cruisers just wish I had the space and help and might actually got more done. Definitely jealous of your space. As for the blue 72 that is actually a 73 model. I have a 73 and glad it is verses a 72. Was probably easier installing a different drivetrain verses a 72. My 73 will get a H42 and Fairey OD. Easy bolt in on a 73 with the right parts. Has the one year only reverse light. Bucket seats and door on the fuel inlet also say 73.
