Below is what I am building for my other FJ40
H55F with 3:1 low in the transfercase with 10% over drive high kit. You can get that kit from Crusier Outfitters or Georg at Cruiser Brothers .

Combined with 33s and 3:70s your good for flat stretches of highway given the 210ft*lb torque band. The benefit with the OD is it helps manage the steep 4.85:1 first gear.

With this combo you get the road manners of an old H42 but if you go on the rocks you have 4.85 first with 3:1 in T/C

This is some cool research - how did you figure out the fuel consumption curve?

Curious - is there such a thing as a transfer case overdrive gear (without something like adding a second overdrive case like a Fairey or Ranger).

I’ll be sticking with 4.11 gears at least in the foreseeable future. I think last time I ran it through the gearing calculations I’d be shifting out of 1st around 11mph instead of 15mph which doesn’t sound too insane.

I’m also running a 350 V8 which spoils higher than the 2F so as long as I don’t mind being deaf I’ve got a little more headroom. The old SP2P fuel crisis intake I’m running falls on its face around 4000RPM but so far I actually think it’s a perfect intake for a truck like this. Tiny intake runners make for damn near perfect throttle response and the whole torque curve gets pushed downhill a bit.

With the $350 10% OD in the splitcase behind the 4 speed with 3.70s i can go 73mph at 2500rpm

Its a cheap path versus a 5speed and new driveshafts and moving the torque tube if you have an older FJ40. Unless you have a unicorn 40 5speed top cover with shifter in the forward position, then you have to cut your floor too. And since my 77 has a reproduction rubber floor mat from cityracer I did not want to go down that path.

I’ll agree it’s definitely cheaper than a 5-speed conversion but aren’t the split cases larger enough that rear driveshaft modifications would still be necessary? Not to mention the parking brake adapter if you don’t have an e-brake rear axle, which also isn’t cheap.

Exactally. Its 100% bolt on. No non Toyota mods needed.

My other 1971 FJ40 with the 5 speed with unicorn 40 top cover requires no torque tube mod since its matched with a full float rear with the ebrake from a BJ42. Still need to modify the transmission cover since its still taller.

Really the split case is shorter by a bit? I always thought it was substantially larger. Good to know!

Are you going to cut in a new fuel door towards the rear and delete the stock door? Considering doing this but unsure how I want to route the filler neck?

In my case, I simply don’t see myself being able to get back out in 44. I hope to be able to drive my Tundra and sleep in my 20’ travel trailer and have less painful adventures, going forward.

So, I saw no reason to postpone the inevitable and chance causing my Wife to have deal with selling something as extraordinary as 44.

You’ll need to let me know how you like that granny gear in the H41. I’m hoping to do a H41/Orion in my truck over the winter. I’m excited for what it will bring off-road, but I’m a bit worried I’ll miss the H42’s road manners by comparison.

Since you already have a 350, I’d recommend the sm465/Orion combo. It awesome offroad and good on the highway. There are times fifth gear(Nav4500/hf55) would be nice, but I rarely really need it-65mph++. The low first /4:1 low is really the bright spot. Maybe a bit slow for my higher geared friends.

I’ve got a H41 sitting in my garage so that ship has sailed. I should still be at 80:1 in 1st/low with that combo. For what I do off-road that’s way overkill.
