The old bib hinge and bolts were toast and required some BFH love

Before I get crucified for not painting the hinge to match the body, the 857 med blue I was able to order and have shipped overseas was a shade to light and I new it would bug the crap out of me.

Thanks to Sonni @ FJ parts for the hinge!

I just installed a rebuilt Quadrajet that I have been packing around for over a decade. I started doing research on the quad and did not realize what the hell I had been missing with my old junkyard quad that I carelessly slapped on 15 years ago. I thought it ran ok but man I did not know the first thing about it's function and how my old one was never set up right. I believe it has only functioned as a 2 barrel! And my choke has been jimmy rigged too. Now I look back and I don't believe it was able to kick in the two back "performance" barrels! I put a neat aluminum 2" spacer to lift the air cleaner up, I can actually see the carb and linkages now. All vacuum hoses and connections now new and I'm going to install a vacuum gauge next. Now tomorrow, figure out how to hook up the throttle cable correctly. I have a feeling performance on the 350 SBC will be vastly improved. It's pretty sad when you have something so long that you forget to check/replace basics like vacuum lines. I'm sure it's long overdue for a new vacuum hose on the 4wd system too. My old hoses and lines were so aged and cracked.

I serviced a customer's VJ40 avout twenty years ago that had this issue. I'd already rebuilt his SM420 and t-case before I discovered the issues with his Q-Jet.
So I called him.
How long have you owned this truck?
About three years.
Has it ever felt underpowered?
No.
Well, your linkage is so sloppy the secondaries have basically been inoperable.
Can you fix it?
I can. But...
1. You haven't missed the power
2. Once I fix it, you're gonna want to use it.
3. Things are gonna wear out faster.

A: leave it alone.

This is funny - I took a pretty similar approach. I actually increased the spring tension on my secondaries to ALMOST turn my quadrajet into a 2 barrel on purpose. Granted, I have a 283 that really doesn't NEED a 4-barrel carb to begin with. The secondaries just BARELY start to open under load at about 3000+ RPM - so the extra "guts" are there if I need them, but it's easy to stay out of the secondaries when I'm just cruising around and don't need them (99% of the time)

Off into the El Pasos!

Thanks Mark. They must have a lot of back spacing because look much deeper than 8". Good looking rims!

I had them built in 2004. I could almost put two fingers between the wheel and the tie rod end.

Your bezel is not upside down!

Have fun Mark!!
With as many medals as you have on your overhead console, you are surely the commander-in-chief of the bezel police.

The El Pasos were a blast...literally.

Set up camp in one of my favorite spots, and waited for the wind to die down.
