Getting another rear bumper in process and some rear adjustable turnbuckle panhard bars welded out.

Found out today that they can’t get the old bushings out of my Rack & Pinion without removing the entire rack, and outsourcing to a machine shop. It is basically the same cost at that point as buying a whole new rack from Lexus. And it turns out that this is one of the few things that is different than the (see this thread LC versus LX Steering Rack ? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/lc-versus-lx-steering-rack.951503/page-2). So now I have to adjust saying my LX is 99% a Landcruiser to 98%… and spend about $2k in the process. Anyone with a Landcruiser want to buy a set of really nice poly Rack & Pinion bushings, new in the unopened package?

That's odd, my trusty mechanic was able to change out the bushings with the poly ones no problem on my 2006. Although it is tight getting in there, and a few things needing to be taken apart, it's totally replaceable without doing any sort of machining to the rack itself. And from my understanding, both versions from the earlier 98-03 and the 04+ both can have their bushings replaced without any machining. Even the non VGRS versions will have replaceable bushings.

Neither of the two shops I go to will try, and nobody else can get me in to even make an assessment. It’s my only vehicle, so the repair needs to get done. In the end it’s ok, I have just under 350,000 miles on the original rack, and we’re going to do the tie Rod ends too, just to get them done. I’ll be happy I got it done before wheeling Uwharrie in the Spring, and Moab and the Badlands & Black Hills of South Dakota in the Summer.
 
Welp, in case you want to show either or both shops this video, it may save you some money and time once they see that it's not the mountain of a job they think it is. This is exactly how my mechanic replaced my bushings.

I love how those look, and have also been seriously considering that wheel/tire setup, how does the spare fit and did you need any spacers or no?
The spare tire well can fit quite a bit larger tire/wheel combo, my old setup was 265/70/18 and it fit perfectly fine, no modifications needed, so my new setup fits in there with a bit of space to spare.
As for the wheels, it's an OE like fit so no need to run spacers, just bolts right up with no rubbing and just a slight amount of poke. The bonus is that the center caps fit over the unsightly front hubs, something a good 90% of the other wheel options don't do, just have to choose the long cap option directly from the Nomad site. Also, if you're not running aftermarket currently, you'll have to buy a set up new lug nuts that are M14x1.5 tapered acorn style as the OE lugs will not fit. Good to pick the longer 1.9"+ length versions to insure it fits the length of the studs.

Haha ! youve got that right. Except they were so used to it they didnt forget it was there and trip on it 5 times so far.......It will be good in a few weeks ;)
 
what year is this thing? looks like a real unicorn, no ahc or fancy infotainment, only thing it needs is to be is thundercloud grey.
It's a 2004, Non-Nav Atlantis Blue. Purchased in Puerto Rico and shipped it to Texas. All LC's up until the 2013 model year did not come equipped with the OEM navigation with built in HVAC controls. You can find a 200 without Nav down there fairly easily. Great thing about it is they are US-Spec so importing is a non-issue.
 
It all started when the battery died. Swapped that out and found the alternator died also. Swapped that out for a reman eBay alt. Didn’t work . Second one was OEM reman I got at Toyota. Worked perfect of course. That led to “well while I’m here” I did an Aisin T belt / water pump kit , cam seals, crank seal , serp belt, idler/tensioner pulleys. Found my rack leaking and inner tie rods loose so just ordered new rack that along w a new pump and hose kit. Can’t wait to swap all that out…. Then gotta get tires and rebuild driveshafts. Trying to figuire out why I just can’t just sell this thing and end my misery. 😂
 
Replaced my Napa 24F battery that was on its way out with a proper OEM Toyota TrueStart 27F from a local dealer. Much to my surprise the Toyota battery was considerably cheaper than anything from the usual auto parts stores and includes an 84 month warranty. Out the door for $171.

Looked at mine today, it looks flimsy…it‘s not totally fixed…so let’s have a look and replace it but HOW DO I GET THIS THING OUT?

If your PCV valve is grommet style, use a heat gun to warm up and soften the old grommet… hopefully it will prevent the grommet from cracking into small pieces. All of the pieces of the old grommet need to be removed. If any pieces fall down into the valve cover, you will need to remove the valve cover to remove those pieces. I used small needle nose pliers and surgical forceps to remove my grommet in one piece after softening it with the heat gun.

When installing the new grommet, use a small dab of silicone grease on the contact surfaces to aid installation of the new grommet, and prevent it from gluing itself to the valve cover.

blowed up my front differential in that mud hole and drove it 500 miles home with the center locked and some really bad binding & clashing at higher steering angles and slow speeds ...

and promptly bought a new differential and installed it along with some new CV axles I happened to have had so I can rebuild the ones that came out since one of them (also going to put in new front drive flanges while I have it apart - one of them felt like the splines were starting to round over and it was hard to get on and off of the CV joint splines).

(to help with other people searching for this in the future, the part number is 41110-6A171 and its the 4-spider-gear / 4-pinion front IFS open differential with 4.30:1 gearing - it fits the 1998 through 2002 model years ... don't ask what it cost, I had that memory erased and I black out every time I try to remember)

Once the front diff is broken in (I'm going to use the 500 mile break-in procedure from Cruiser Outfitters) I'm going to go ahead and ...
  • figure out why the rear locker isn't locking
  • run extended breathers for the front, rear, & transfer case for peace of mind & street cred
  • change all the fluids in the above
  • inspect what looks like a coolant leak (please don't be the water pump ...)
  • maybe clean it
