What have you done to your 100 Series this week? (23 Viewers)

Lately I’ve been hearing a droany whomp, whomp whomp from front end like maybe an issue with a particular spot on a tire. Couldn’t see anything obvious so chalked it up as just the mud tire lugs. Then I hear a slight metal scrape like brake pads need changing.

Normally when I hear that I carry on a little longer to make sure the sound is consistent when braking and/or not braking. But, oddly, this time I decided to immediately get to my driveway and replace the front brakes, so I thought. I jacked up front wheel, began loosening lugs then remembered to do the customary 12 - 6 tire wiggle to make sure bearings are tight.

Holy smokes the hub and bearings were crazy loose. Never seen that before. Not even close. And I never had any steering wobble so I never suspected possible loose bearings.

So what I did to “100 series this week” was cleaned up bearings and hub, inspected perfect looking bearings, regreased and tightened. All good, no whomp, whomp and front pads are nice and thick.

Can’t believe I had no steering wheel wobble with insanely loose hub and 33” mudders.

That is scary - I have been bitten by front wheel bearings before :(
Do you know who did the bearing job last time? How long ago was it? Did you see any reason for coming loose like that?

I was probably the last one in there and it’s been a long time. But check it regularly when rotating tires. Have had axles replaced but shouldn’t have had any affect on bearings other than replacing axle flange. Couldn’t really tell why it was loose. Tabs may have been not have been right enough.

The old girl is just over 295k and did great the on 540 mile round trip to our Northern MI home.
Day 1 the sun roof decided to get stuck tilted open, so I forced it down and sealed for now. It just started leaking anyway and never gets used.
Just did the heater T’s before leaving and it ran excellent, as did the heat.
Put about 100 miles through forest trails and service roads to see the fall color changes. Not too much change in the images, but there’s some amazing color to be seen already.
My wife and I are expecting our first, so it limited where we could explore. The dog is a trail champion.
Tons of fun!

I think I found the problem. I started hearing a slight whomp whomp again today. Immediately checked tire wiggle and it was slightly loose again. I dove back in it to find the lock washer was turning with the lock nut. The washer tab has seen better days and wasn’t holding steady in place.

I replaced lock washer and we’ll see how it goes.

Busy weekend....new toyota reman starter, new gaskets on water bypasses, cleaned intake ports, nrw valve covers gaskets and tube grommets, new plugs, denso coils, fixed some broken connectors, cleaned intake manifold and rebuilt injectors (which were stupid filthy), new fpv and damper (did pump a week ago)....I think that's it? New maf sensor and cleaned throttle body oh and heater tees. Cleaned out the bypassed and stuck Sai valve and added a filter to the pump (even tho it's blocked off and bypassed)

It's a whole different beast now. Sounds angry and the tach sweeps way faster now.

Picked up a topside creeper for this job and it was WELL worth it. Highly recommend getting one.

I did this over after attempting it first time with my own thread and leather. This time I bought this kit from eBay user aglausa. The kit is premium and the leather is really good. The thread is super strong, hard to break with just the strength from your hands, unless you’re really trying.

I’ve got some gaps as you can see from my pictures.
if anybody has any tips on how to tighten those gaps up, other than maybe just using a clamp as you are sewing along, I’ve no better ideas, and except having the steering wheel in a vice and removed from the vehicle to do the job.
All in all for under 60 bucks shipped with thread, needle, leather, and the holes pre-punched, I’m pretty happy versus paying $800 for a dealer steering wheel.
This took about five hours of my time. If anybody’s ever done this and done it better, I’d love to know what tips you have to share. Thanks!

Just a quick rub down with Meguiar's Quick Wax before hitting the trails to avoid pinstripes.

It was really dirty on Sunday.

Installed bio bumper. This bumper is so sick I can't wait to get it out on the trails. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a rear. Mike was great to work with.

That's a great looking bumper! Can you still carry the spare in the stock location?
Yes I have a 285/70/17 Firestone dueler AT under there. I did the mod to raise it up a bit and it doesn't look bad. In the pics there is no spare there.

Very good! Seems like with a lot of the aftermarket bumpers you have to run a swing out for the spare. Good to know it will fit underneath with the BIO bumper.
Main reason I went with it!
