Newlyweds - 7 months. Good call. She has also requested off (on her own) for ExpoEast. She had a great time at ExpoWest. I found the one.
Congrats

Pulled the PO's K&N filter. This is why we shouldn't use them, the amount of junk downstream of the filter was ridiculous!
Also hauled some lucerne for the horse. I love my barn doors!View attachment 1089774View attachment 1089776
Two or three weeks ago... Ohio to Arizona and back for Overland Expowest 2015.
Drove the "Albino Rhino" the entire time with no problems. 5,525 miles.

Final recap. We are ready to go again!

That's pretty awesome. My wife and I are newly weds as well, just married back in October. We were planning a drive out west this summer but my 80 is too new to me to have done enough baselining to trust it that far. We are just up in Columbus. I think we are going to drive it out west next summer and hopefully I can talk her into targeting the Overland Expo. There is a small chance that I might be heading to Asheville for the East Expo, but as it sits now I have a conflict.![]()

@Dubbinchris We married in October as well, congrats! Hopefully you will be able to find a way to get to ExpoEast. My wife loved meeting all of the other couples our age that decided to travel instead of work. It was really sobering to meet so many 30-40 year old people that put life experience ahead of work and the daily grind. She left talking about buying a dedicated trailer
It was my "trip of a lifetime". Hoping we can travel out west a lot more in the future. So much left to see and do.
You've had 6+ months to baseline your rig! Quit slacking!![]()
Haha, what a cool coincidence! Unfortunately we too mostly live the daily grind life, but are able to take a few weeks off a year to do stuff and go places. She's more doing the daily grind than I, as I only work 3 days a week and at night...typical hospital shifts. We do a lot of mtn biking and mtn bike racing together, which is actually the conflict for overland expo east. I'm at work tonight and will be watching your videos during my down time.
Keeping tabs are you?
Yeah it all takes time.....and money! I'm lucky enough to have ben "allowed" to even buy thy 80, so I can't blow up the budget baselining it all at once. All in due time though. The truck came with a few more problems than I was led to believe when I bought it.
How does the K&N filter create gunk downstream? I've had a K&N in my 80 for 20+ years. Do you mean from the oil on the filter?
I just figured you bought it around when you joined MUD.Had to give you crap.
And I can spot you newlyweds a mile away. You still care enough to ask permission to spend money on your 80...![]()
That's funny. My wife is an RNII and was able to get 17 days off. I was able to carry over vacation from last year to do this trip. I have 2 days of PTO for all of 2015 left.
Baseline- Just do this, best video out there.

Change all the fluids, I actually paid the dealer to do that.
Then I rebuilt the front axle, with new front and rear brakes in a weekend.
That's basically all I have done. Besides lift and tires.
Follow up**One of the local CSC members showed me his old Y-Pipe off his 80 and how very restrictive the 2 tubes leading into the single pipe transition become. The 2 pipes are squeezed down to 50% of thier diameter and are seperated until they meet with the single tube. We chop-sawed the old pipe to show this feature.
Following the old adage of "the more air in and the more air out" leads to better performance and gas mileage, I took his advise and looked into the Magnaflow 23120 pipe. This is 404 Stainless that also incorporates the first catalytic converter. As you can see the new pipe is full diameter throughout the Y for much better flow.
A few years ago I replaced the pinched down section of the exhaust pipe over the 3rd rear crossmember to help my supercharger breathe well but I didnt realize that the big restriction up front at the Ypipe. I dont expect huge differences, but will monitor my Ultraguage for mpgs and see how it performs with some driving.
The install was more time consuming than thought due to the old studs, nuts, and O2 sensor that didnt like being disturbed after so many years. The fitment is a direct bolt up as advertised and fit well. The kit comes with all the gaskets that are needed too.
The old pipe was not in the best of shape and the first cat spit out a fair amount of cat sand when removed due to age. I like that the new first cat is shaped to not hang down to catch any rocks.
