What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (63 Viewers)

This weekend I found out I'm still getting water inside my Cruiser, down on the floorboards. It's not "standing water" but it's a little more than damp. Not sopping, like if you put your hand down there and push, but...you can feel it.

I recently had the windshield gasket replaced (OEM with a shop who knows 80 series cruiser glass gasket requirements) and thought this would alleviate my water issues...come to find out, the seal on the sunroof isn't getting the job done and the Portland rain seeps in, travels wherever it goes, down the A-Pillar and then into the floors. It's also seeping into the headliner.

So, I purchased some Gorilla Waterproof sealant tape (4" wide) and sealed the sunroof with it and threw in three moisture collectors.

I'd been thinking about doing the update on the carpet...there's a vendor here on MUD that cuts new carpets; I want to update the seats anyways to Audi A4s seats...might as well rip out the carpet, do the heat shielding/sound dampening mod, add the new carpet, and put in the seats, and then pull the headliner down, clean and sterilize the area, clean the headliner itself, and then put it back. This will wait until the summer though. Until then, the sunroof will stay sealed with the tape. I'll also order a new OEM seal for it and probably have the same glass place who replaced the windshield gasket do this work also. Might as well replace the rear glass gasket also at that point.

Damn.

I also ordered my full knuckle rebuild kit with Toyo bearings.

My buddies and I also drove out to the firs leg of the WABDR to see how much snow there is for a run we were thinking about doing next saturday...and that run is now on hold until summer due to snow and a lot of debris. We'll find another run for my 80, his Disco2, and the Gladiator.

There are times where I kinda think about just throwing in the towel to sell it and go with another rig; apparently the PO didn't take care of their 80 and the little things like the seals...and the front knuckles...and I know are general maintenance for a 25 year old vehicle but the electrical gremlins I have bug the jeebus out of me. But at the same time, working on this thing is half the (frustrating) fun.

My bet is your sunroof drains are plugged.

Watched some YouTube videos and became a temporary expert to do some seat refreshing.

Just dropped 2k on parts for the engine rebuild. Still need radiator, water pump, main bearings and rod bearings. Gotta pay to play. Part numbers are for a 1fz fe. Partsouq is half the price of a dealer and they have the best packaging you will find.

Hey, I finally got around to taking some pictures. When I stopped through Park City on my way south Gene, the owner of Rocky Road, was there and waiting for me. He had me pull my truck into his shop and got down on his back right beside me to help me get these damn things installed. I'm actually really impressed with the build quality. One thing I will note is that these are made specifically for the FZJ80 and there are some dimensions that are slightly different on the FJ80 from 91 and 92. Gene was not aware of this as he's never received any complaints and he's so rarely makes them for the FJ80. While we were installing, he took some notes to make sure that any of the kits going out the door for an FJ80 versus an FZJ80 will be trimmed in all the appropriate places for seamless fit.

Love the rim-to-tire-size ratio you got goin on there.

Don’t think you need a silicone gasket. Same happened here but was rebuilt fine after making some adjustments:
Well this is perfection to be honest, i love the workmenship and attention to details.

My winch is a an old WARN model, i contacted them several times and have yet to receive further information on mh model.
I will either make a gasket or use gasket compound for sealing.

The winch postion is also an issue that needs addressing with my current setup. Either will do some changes to existing one or build / buy a new fendor

Found out this light actually works

Yup, mine popped on the other day....since it's not my daily, I forget to pay attention to it as my daily has a chime and half the dash lights up with a countdown mileage tracker. Fortunately, my PO installed the LRA fuel tank, which I absolutely love having, especially on the long cross country haul to get her home 3k miles. I get about 550-600 miles on a combo fill up on the road, but at a cost of $200 at a time for 40+ gallons at empty.

With a 25 gallon tank I can comfortably do 400+ on the highway. Not sure I'd want much more. I have a small bladder

Since you are in there and it is easy access, you may want to replace the starter now if it is original, keep the old for a spare. Replace all power steering hoses and trans hoses. Also, O rings on dipsticks where they enter the trans and engine housings. New dipsticks are nice too, it is amazing how tight they are! Don't forget distributor rings. Also did not see a fuel filter and, it would be a good time to get to the rear heater hoses if you want to replace with factory, you won't be able to replace the line against the firewall later. Finally, check your gasket kit when it comes in, mine was missing one for the oil cooler.

Yah I have lots of bulk gates hose and starter and alternator will be rebuilt. Thanks for the suggestions. Not my first rodeo this is my 4th rebuild and will be done correctly so I can sell it easily once it’s broken in.

Had a broken hub stud for last few weeks so “MUD induced paranoia” caused me to change them all out including wheel studs. 😝
Put studs in freezer overnight then used wits-end tool and torque wrench set at 67 ftlbs to pull them home.
Shout out to wits-end @NLXTACY for the stud tool, the front axle reference poster, and the hub kits. Makes working on cruiser 10x easier.
SO nice to know studs are new and have NEVER been torqued past spec!

I've got to replace a broken stud as well. Anything else that should be done simultaneously?

Connected the hood LED lamp to multiiswitch connector on aux battery.

Got my 10 year old daughter to work on the car with me, they need to love the car at a young age.

More sorting of electrical mess left previously, rerouted cables for easier access. View attachment 3189956View attachment 3189957

Took the fendor off again. I either need a new fendor or to sort out the old one by completely changing how its installed.
Doing mine next😳

Head gasket.

Haha just kidding. But you could go as far as you want really. But the number of times these hub studs are used for brake jobs, knuckle jobs, to re-torque bearings plus the age, I figure if you’re gonna do one, do all 6. You can stop there, and can be done without removing hub and rotor.
I chose to make it a stud party (that sounds weird) and did the wheel studs and removed rotor and hub to do so. That also means you can inspect bearings and grease and re-torque if needed when re-installed. Throw a new rotor on as well if needed.
Side note, whatever wrench monkey did my brakes last must have used Thore’s impact wrench on the rotor bolts, I had to use a 1/2” breaker bar to loosen so it feels good to have them reinstalled to the proper 47ftlbs.

Adding a dash cam. Any good units?
Want motion sensing to catch Cat thieves.

Purchased a bunch of waterproof connectors from Ali-express to replace / add outside connectors (mostly lights and removable equipment).

Ha. Thankfully my HG has been done along with a full rebuild.

I'll go ahead and do all 6.
