It's been replaced with a brass unit, I am hoping the local radiator shop can repair it.

Thats what I put in mine. I think my old 1991 (made in march of 1990) had the original radiator in it. Wish I could have found an OEM one. No longer available :frown:. Whats wrong with your transfer case?

It’s growling at me, i believe the PO ran it out of fluid. It’ll probably go a while longer but I am going to pick up a used unit and throw it in and then rebuild this one and put reduction gears in there.

Before the "work from home" instruction was ordered I started to make a list of everything on my rig that causes even the slightest ripple of annoyance. The plan is work through the list when I am grounded so as to reduce the boredom.
Top of the list was stopping my camping gear rattling like mad so I made a set of drawers. Each drawer has a separate compartment for each piece of camping gear.

All nicely laid out for ease of access.

Ball bearing slides with soft close and a built in lock mechanism of sorts.

Covered them with same cheapo carpet stuff from Home Depot as I used on my KISS drawers. Pretty happy with the end result..🙂

What did you make the compartments out of? Thin wood?

The little compartments are made out some craft wood (I think Poplar) i picked up at Lowes. Pretty cheap and very light..

Installed the RJ45 and USB mounts from @Outsane . Really cleaned up my install. Both ports are run to my Midland MXT275 MicroMobile GMRS radio at this time. I’ll swap the USB over to a head unit whenever I get one and install it.

I finally finished up my water pump, thermostat, coolant hose, and charcoal filter replacement on the old 3fe. Haha I went ahead and started it up first thing this morning and of course I had a couple leaks from a few of the sensors on the thermostat housing. So I proceeded to try and remove the sensors and add teflon along with a good torque to stop the leaks. I didn't want to pull the entire housing and belts again so I got creative. I was able to find a socket and cut part out of the middle and weld it back up = water temp sensor socket that fits just right into the tiny little space inbetween the sensor and air pump (green sensor).

In the process of working on the leaks I also managed to break the old brittle wire going into the back of the water temperature switch. Being a broke college student with canceled classes and lots of time to kill I decided to try and save a few bucks and salvage the plug. A quick Google search brought up this picture from an old Mud thread posted by NLXTACY, thanks bro. I think it is so cool that Toyota gives blue prints for making your own tool to fix your rig.

I went ahead a grabbed an old nail and went to town with some files and diamond sharpening stones and this was my finished product.

I stuck it in the groove inside the plug and it worked perfect. The pin popped right out!!!! It probably would have been easier to just buy a new part but it was fun filing down the nail and having it work so well. Here is the repaired plug, it is sealed with neutral silicone and heat shrink under the electrical tape.

Anywase, lessons learned.
1. Be careful with 30 year old wires and sensors
2. Toyota and the major aftermarket parts houses all wanted $200 - $250 for a cold start injector timer switch. They were new on ebay for $100 but shipping was a month from Dubai, Japan, or partsouq. This switch/sensor was used in 22re's and 3.0 toyota motors from the early nineties (pre 95) along with celia's and mr2's. I was able to find one for $30 at the local junkyard and it tested good.
3. And last but not least a good set of radiator hose picks are a must for this job.

I made a trip to Greenville this weekend (4 hours from home) for a test for my job. On the ferry (I live on an actual island only accessible with a car by boat) I noticed a drip from close to the power steering high pressure lines. I thought it was my high pressure line. (witch has been leaking too) Turns out its the radiator. it leaked out probably 2-3 cups. I toped the radiator off with some water at about half way to my destination but its back where it was when I noticed it. Recently replaced the thermostat (Not leaking) but I think that caused the 30 year old OEM tank to leak.

then turns out the radiator was the least of my worries.... That trip to Greenville from Ocracoke and back was been nothing but hell. I blew a break line on the way back. Its very unsettling when you have to stop at highway speeds and feel the breaks travel to the floor.... thank god for e brakes. and of course its a hard line section that runs beside the gas tank and frame rail almost the length of the fj80. turns out a half inch long section was rusty just in a spot where its not noticeable. Then at the auto zone (to get fluid so I could limp home) The car did the whole cranking cranking cranking cranking cranking.... it did not start. I did get 25 feet of break line but now the car refuses to start!. it was not the EFI fuse I have a spare. It started 30min later and I have no idea why it decided to. I had just found a tow service. The fuel pump is new. previous owner replaced it. and I can confirm it because I have been in the tank to replace the filter on the end. maybe fuel pressure regulator or the coil is not working properly? I blame Friday the 13th.

Today Saturday I am flaring and replacing break lines... I have one more fitting to take off. Then to bleed the breaks. Radiator is still on the way. Hopefully that will be ok when it comes in. I purchased new front window regulators at the same time! still don't know why it would not crank though. I think fuel pressure regulator maybe? I don't think its the efi

Big fj80 repair weekend! Gotta keep my old gal going.

What radiator did you go with? Ocracoke is one of my favorite places on the east coast. Always took the swam quarter ferry.

Installed an orange Boxx PSD and found some CDs from the P.O. I’ve had this truck for over 5 years... I guess I’ve never listened to a CD? Anyone know what language this is? Vietnamese?

Well. We went down to Big Bend and had ourselves a good old fashioned adventure. Got caught in a huge storm 20 miles from pavement which brought big hail and flash floods. I put the Cruisers pass into the storm to minimize broken glass. We lost both tailights(where can I find those?), one mirror, and the hood took a beating. Teamed up with a couple other rigs and self rescued and rescued 2 guys that were on motorcycles that got bruised up by the hail. Pushed through some pretty rough spots of deep flooding nearly hood deep and we are on a Slee 6" with 35's. Jeep in front got pushed sideways at one point but our heavy Cruiser stayed planted. Survived all that to only have the right wheel studs sheer off at about 45 mph sending the wheel out into the desert which took a good hour to find. Tire took the flare off real quick. Tow Bill to nearest shop was huge. We learned a lot over 5 days. Some things we knew but forgot and somethings were new lessons. Gotta love getting out there! At least we have some stories to add to our list and it created some great family dynamics where we needed to work together and rely on each to get problems solved.

Picked up a spare transmission and transfer case from a 97. I'll rebuild them eventually. Yes that's an extension cord. When I took my tool boxes out to make room, I forgot to grab my rachet straps out.

Fitted a Toyota auxiliary electric fan. All the fixtures are already there so it is more or less plug and play.

I installed mine with a switch in the cab so I have some control when off road.
This thing can move a serious amount of air.
