Awhile back getting a respite from the empire of dirt and all that is boring we as a family decided to catch the August eclipse in the Mountains and camp the night before I uh let my wife drive the road was not traveled much she fails to see branch and shattered the snorkle grate over the intake. Ok no big deal. Move to last week I get the itch to build the original looking grate out of steel. I made this with a drill a triangle file a round file, jig saw. Self etching primer and bed liner over coat looks original from 2ft lots of free time after baby goes to sleep to file getting it to where I thought it looked ok. Much tougher now LOL I like tinkering with stuff like this

What steering stab. is that?
at a stand still with this project. Apparently 4x4 labs doesn't check their kits before shipping them out. tried to start on my swing outs but the kit didn't come with the bearing races or the sleeves. So at this point I am missing the races, sleeves, tube top caps and rear recovery points. I cant move forward on the project without those items. I'm very disappointed with this kit at this point. at this rate I am sure that more items will be missing as i move on to the tire carrier, jerry can holder and front bumper. For as much money as you pay for these kits you would expect everything to be present. Especially since they are almost impossible to get a hold of. And considering that it takes months to get your order they should have plenty of time to check that all parts are present.
Agreed. Pretty unsettling.

Tightened up the belts. Were way too loose. Lost some knuckle skin and some drops of blood. Ordered correct range Gates "cricket" belt tester.

Discovered PS paperclip hoses leaking: added to list.

With some advice fro @LandCruiserPhil I began finishing my solar setup. Fabricated some mounts that I’ll be offering in the future. Mounted to my newly designed rack that I’ll also be offering in the near future.

Ran cabling through flex conduit to the wanderer under the hood. Now my 80QT freezer can run 24/7 and stay at 33 degrees with no shore power.

Next up is an aluminum cover that will cover the 2 panels during off-roading on east coast wooded trails.

Also fabricating a mechanism to easily store panels under the rack so you can utilize the rack for getting to camp then have solar slide to top of rack for max sun.

Thinking about ordering a set of SCS F5's but as a wheel rookie, how much farther will 3.50" backspace sit out compared to stock? Just an inch or 1.5 or....?

I have F5's on mine w/ 285/75/16's don't stick out past flares at all

Those are with the 3.50 backspace/-25mm offset? They look great, I really like the wheel/truck color combo. I have 285's too.

Yes, I think its the only offset available in 16". I would do it again

Had a couple of perfect weather days this week in between the rain and wind. Got the 80 out of the garage for a little sunshine and beach time.

Sometimes you just need to spend a little time staring out to sea to really fine tune what your next round of mods and maintanence will be.

Drove my truck to work and then to the trails. I hadn't been on real trails in a long time and it felt great. I wish I could say the same for the Cruiser. Throttle position sensor is bad. I've got to wait till Tuesday to get the replacement.

Your 80 looks way to clean to have ever been on a “real” trail and I’m not referring only to the complete lack of dirt in that professional looking photo.

Nice Landcruiser though....

Went for another drive in the same area as Thursday before work. It required a little more attention driving, as well as chains in one section. Steep drop off one side, huge rut that would swallow up and high center the Land Cruiser on the other. There was six-eight inches on the road at 5500’. And it was blowing pretty good. Even with the tires aired down to 15 lbs using the arb deflator, I was slipping everywhere. The actual pictures I got of the land cruiser was at about 2500-3000’ elevation. Still waiting for my Slee Shortbus on freight.

Changed the oil and finally gave it a bath, but more importantly, I refreshed the clear coat on the hood. As many of our metallic 20yr old 80's show faded or peeling clear I decided to beat mine to the punch. There were a few spots in the center that were beginning to look like the clear coat was going to be faded/gone enough that I would have to deal with the basecoat. I want nothing to do with trying to match the metallic base, so with a good 1000 grit sanding and a few coats of new clear I'll be good to go for another 10yrs or so. Color sand and buff this week to get that mall crawl shine back:)

Looks great, mine definitely needs this too.

Thanks.

Do it before it's too late. I'll probably deal with the flares and roof pretty soon too...they're looking a bit dry.

Roof taken care of :)

(And yes I took off the black bars and checked for rust before doing the whole thing, repainted them too)

Dropped the headliner and used a rivet/washer combo to plug the holes.

Do you have a a write up on this? I'm planning on pulling the trigger on this soon and would love some heads up info.
