To a large extent it is in how you take care of them. Neglect a diesel and you are in for a world of hurt. That's why it's really scary to try and buy a used one.

Yup, but those turbos are a crap shoot, it's better to replace early and be safe.

Nothing yet waiting for it to stop

Finished the valve cover paint. Still lots to finish on my Overdue PM Journey. Family time takes precedence.

Couple updates:

-rolled 160k
-sitting at Sears waiting for them to test for a parasitic draw on my battery so they'll finally warranty it (3 weeks)

Since pics are like p*rn around here, I have a couple :hillbilly::flipoff2:

And yes, the 80 gets the garage. The little tugboat TDI Jetta gets the hard life and is subject to the elements.

Flat towed a buddys 2000ish 4 door f350 home down the highway on a strap. Truck had grenaded a turbo but still ran at first, ate enough oil it couldnt fire injectors and shut itself down. Managed 70mph on the flat comfortably, inspite of common sense and a big old anchor out back. Not bad for an old cruiser, although I wouldn't want to do it for an extended period. The usual Canadian winter conditions were just the icing on the cake/windshield/road.

This seems like a terrible idea, especially at that speed with a strap. Glad nothing happened.

I made it to work.

Not usually a notable challenge, but it was about 12 deg F, raining and only myself and an old Volvo AWD made it over the mountain pass without sliding off the road. Had to stop to chip ice off the windshield twice.

Of course, work is a mountain range away, and it's nice here, so I don't even have any cool pictures to go with the story... :(

Edited to add: I bought GGAT2s, primarily because of their positive ice and snow reviews, and I want to X2 those. They are good on ice and snow.

GGAT2s?

Also dealt with cleanup of a small mess from some Power Service Diesel Additive that spilled when the bottle fell over last week. That stuff is NASTY! Wasn't bad if the truck was cold, but if it warmed up inside the smell was terrible, and it burned my eyes!
I had a bottle of Power Service "pop" inside one of my rear quarter panels. I know your pain.

My rear axle work is finally complete and the truck is back on the road. Replaced the housing, shortside axle shaft, passenger side hub, abs sensor, all new bearings/seals. Gah! On the upside, I have an extra locking rear diff if good condition if anyone is looking for one. (stock gears).

General Grabber AT2s

Same here, LOVE THEM

Ah yes. I put them on my 70. Liked them a lot. I'm leaning that way for my 80.

Lean harder they're great on an 80! Just wait for Sears to have a sale then pit that against wally world, after rebate, price match, mount and balance with road hazard for 5 I was out the door at under $1200 for 315's

I was hoping flat towing on a strap meant something else in Canada. If he actually pulled a dead truck down the road at speed, wow, just wow. Very dangerous.
It didn't even occur to me that it might mean something different in Canada, but yeah it sure sounded like flat towing down the freeway with a tow strap. Insane.

I was thinking oil pressure looked low for the rpm, but only based on my truck and my experience, would be on the north side of the upper marker
Hmm, before I began to rebuild my 3fe it never showed higher than the first line no matter what the rpm.

While we are on the subject of oil pressure, yours looks really low.

Maybe a couple things I should add.. Initially truck was running, once truck died totally things slowed down to a crawl. Speed was only achieved briefly on one straight flat section of a rural highway with an unobstructed view of the local nothingness, all approaches to road in question were in sight, and distant. Still not a good choice, I wouldnt repeat the performance.

yeah, I've often wondered that but I was at idle. Under acceleration it pops up to the two thirds mark and at cruise it stays in the middle ....I've put 17k on it without any change. I run what's specified on the oil cap. Without doing much research, does it still sound low?
