Customer’s HJ61 is back at the shop after another shakedown. So many issues from the scummy importer to deal with.

New owner uses this truck for what it’s intended for. Which is cool! But also stressful given the vehicle 😳

On a future trip he will be traveling and be in areas up North that always see negative temps so he wants to make sure things are working properly.

One of the things we were unsure about is whether the intake preheater was working properly. At 0° the “coil” dash light should turn on and the relay kick on the pre-heater. This warns the air before combustion with the 12H-T diesel. So how do you test it? Well we could run thru the ohm rating and find some resistors and and and…

Oooooor pull out the CO2 tank and blast the pre-heater plate and sensor until it reaches 0°. Bing. Worked like a charm and the pre-heater does pre heating things.

Second drive in the Grey Gardens 62. It gets better every drive.

Added a dual oil filter set up and took care of some small issues.

I’ve seen guys take heavy duty magnets and stick them to the outside of the filter. It collects al the ferrous metal floating around from normal wear and helps prevent it from building up a sludgy lapping compound. I have yet to try it on my truck but have been meaning to for some time. I think it’s pretty popular for tractor trailers and big trucks.
 
I've seen that, it wouldn't hurt to do that on top of what I have done. I'm a detail geek with a background in failure analysis. Looking at stuff at 1000x shows you how little things have a big impact.

The engine on this 62 was bad. Zero compression and locked up. A lot of blood, sweat and tears from my buddy got the Motor moving again. Anything I can do to save the 3FE while leaving it in place will help immensely.

I'm running 7 quarts oil, 1 quart ATF to try and get some of this sluge out of it. It's working well, good filtration is helping.

That does look nice...do you simply provide a plating shop with a bunch of rusty, grimy old bolts and bits and it comes back like that?

Yes...that pretty much exactly what happened. I'm currently in the process of restoring my entire engine bay, and some of the hard lines I wanted to replace were discontinued. I opted to instead have the original ones restored. I soaked all the hardware, lines, brackets, hinges ect ect in Evapo-rust overnight to be sure they were worth restoring, then went ahead and dropped them off. The shop cleans everything in acid then dips it in zinc. The process doesn't hurt the rubber either so I was able to do my A/C lines as well.

I also found bags of 60 series hardware from Japanese junkyards on Yahoo auctions. Essentially these junkyards disassemble 60's and toss all the hardware into a bucket, then sell the hardware. So not only did I do all the hardware from my truck, I also now have about 50lbs of extra hardware freshly restored and ready to use when I need it.

not a bad way to spend $280

It’s blank on both sides. The magic they have is in the proprietary adapter nipple.

None of the sealing is done on the bottom face. They have a nipple with an o ring that seals to the inside of the red adapter part, and then the upper part has a grooved part for the original filter to seal against.

It’s awesome and the owner of the company is very helpful.

@HemiAlex what does the block end of that remote filter setup look like?

You were right when you said it was the single biggest improvement I could make. Went into garage just to look at it again this morning.
Had thought about adding sound deadener, but stock floor is super nice and I don't really use it for long trips, so the noise is tolerable.
