Decided to drive my cruiser about four hours north to Dallas on Thursday for a working weekend...

Then this happened...

IMG_9577.JPG

The motor shut down and I coasted to the side of the road to see what the problem was...

Sat like this for an hour and no one stopped to ask if I needed help. I expected better From my fellow Texans! I really didn't need help, I had my tools with me as always... but still.

Overheated of course. After a quick conference with Jim and Cody, we all agreed that the thermostat was FUBAR, and was seized in the closed position, preventing any coolant from circulating through the system. Really kind of impressed how long it ran before ultimately overheating.

being nowhere near a new thermostat, I decided to just open up the top and pull it out and finish the trip up without a thermostat.

In the meantime, Jim got on the phone and ordered a replacement t-stat and gaskets from a local Toyota dealership near the hotel I was going to be staying at. That's how Texans normally are. Thanks @CenTXFJ60.

I made the rest of the trip up without any issues and I checked into the hotel and the took in a Rangers game with my group...

I walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth sealed the deal for the home team.

Meanwhile back home, my San Antonio Spurs blew out the Houston Rockets. This day was turning out to be pretty good.

The next morning I went to the dealership where they had my parts waiting for me. Pretty sweet. Thanks again Jim.

I stayed and played with our group for the rest of the day and finished the night atMedieval Times... our knight won the tournament, so far, I'm 3 and 0 for the weekend.

This morning, I sent our group to Six Flags and I stayed behind to install the new t-stat.

Man, I wish I was at home where I could clean this stuff up better...

IMG_9644.JPG

But it's all in now, and I burped the system after adding abouta gallon of distilled water to the system. I estimate that I lost about a quart each time I opened the housing.

Wish me luck. If you're in Texas traveling south on IH-35, and you see a red Land Cruiser pulled over on the side of the road with the hood up, stop and say hello!

Medieval times is a fun time. I saw it down in FL w/ my daughter and her dad on her make a wish trip.
Glad you've got people able to help you out! Jim is a great friend. So she spiked and you kept driving her huh? Man you've got bigger balls than I thought. ;)

I'd have to know how big you thought my balls were before I can figure out if that was a compliment or an insult :)

Anyway, I made it back to San Antonio and the cooling system ran perfectly. I only had to pull over once, to let this stowaway out of the cabin...

He might have been friendly, but he looked a little shady. I'm sure he has a long flight back home...

I took the "Texas Autobahn" home, in order to avoid the traffic in Austin...

As you can imagine, my Land Cruiser wasn't very popular with the other commuters

Went on a run with our 4x4 club. Our travels took us from Big Pine, past the Eureka Dunes, to Saline Valley Hot Springs and back. 130 miles in all and no breakdowns:)
