Picked up a new front axle from a 1983 mini-truck today to replace the original on my piggy. Nice score for $100.
Isn't a mini truck axle 2-3" shorter then a land cruiser axle? Are you going to be using wheel spacers? Nice score! Parts even early '80s seem to be getting harder to find.

Howdy! Min truck axles are not a direct swap for FJ 40/55 axles. The steering arms are different, and the ring and pinion are MUCH smaller and not as strong. You could use the outer ends to swap onto your original so you can have newer knuckles and disc brakes, but it is not a good candidate for a direct swap. For the price you paid, you could sell it to someone looking for a solid front axle swap on an 86 and newer min truck/4runner. That is a very popular conversion, and the solid axle is in high demand. Haven't taken measurements yet, but I believe, and may be wrong, that this axle is the same as an early FJ 60 axle? What I was looking for is the ability to upgrade to longfield superaxles, which wasnt available with my '72 stock axles. Am I completely wrong? BTW, I'm going SOA before it ever hits the road again so spring perch doesnt matter.... I honestly look forward to your input... Im definitely not set in my ways about anything here, but, this seemed like a great deal to me. Im a full-time student right now, so the cruiser is on hold financially but always in my mind! Feel free to put in your ideas. Criticism is a whole different animal in cruiserland, lol. I just want to learn as much as I can here. No worries!!!!!!! Just love the Pig!

None of the mini truck axles are even close to being LandCruiser axles. Not the same caliber of parts. A 60 series axles is pretty much the same as a 40/55 series, but it is about 3" wider. If you do end up doing an SOA with a 60 axle, the passenger side spring perch will interfere with the right side of the differential housing a bit. There are ways to work around it. John
Finally got the rear window unstuck. The PO's "Land Cruiser Specialist" had removed/trashed the rear window channel during it's "restoration" (lots of Bondo, thin-yet-still runny paint, among other horror stories), and run the rear window all the way up jamming it up against the body. 
Took a while, but I managed to get it loose, and open the gate for the first time since I got it.

was not starting very well,replaced the stock fuel filter,and added a glass filter between the pump and carb for visual inspection.Fired right up,so we went for a Sunday drive.Prrrrrrr.

Actually there is a lot to be said about the 'hammer/Tecate combo program for wrenchin'.

Have you noticed a difference in the roar with that dynamat installed? Are you going to put some material on the inside of the doors and the rear panels? I would imagine that that would help on the sound deadening. No? The roar would be great to be rid of.
No hammer/Tecate needed for that mod, just the Bud/hooter program, (tee hee)
...... but anyway.
I have not put all the stuff back in and road tested yet, since the Transfer case is still in my shed waiting for the rebuild kit to arrive. I decided on the dynamat at this time because of the wait, and I can't stand waiting... I did put down some very dense camping pads in the back and covered them with the original rubber mat since I ran out of Dynamat. I will probably purchase a little more sound deadening for the doors and the back if they need it. Gotta wait for the next paycheck. I'll repost once she's back on the road. Should only be another couple a days.
There are lots of opinions out there about sound deadening material and certainly cheeper ones than Dynamat, but I keep hearing about how the others are junk, or they stink, or just audiophiles bickering about different ones. I already had the Dynamat and it was simple to put on, cut, shape and such. I did put two layers over the tranny hump! I hope it doesn't make it rust more.... sheesh

Yeeaahhh! Rebuilt the transfer case today and looky here! maybe this is the cause of my nasty whine at start of acceleration phase at speeds over 35 or 40. I'll know in a couple days when I get it all back together. I do love digging into something to rebuild it and actually finding (what I hope) was the problem.
A little blurry, but look at that ground up area on the idler shaft. the bearing was all boogered up too.

In the roofing section of Lowes and Home Depot they sale Easy Patch for tin roofs, It the same stuff as Dynamat and it only $14 for a 25' roll. I just uesd it to line My 93 Dodge 5.9 cummins and you can hardly hear the 6bt now that its in. Just a tip for anyone that wants to Dynamat that want to save a few bucks.

Htown, Does that stuff smell at all? I have not tried it but have read that it puts off a nasty odor for a while. I still need to do a little more and would like to try that.
