Coming in with a new project, adventure and life changing news! my wife and I are expecting a child! Its the best news and I am so excited to be a father. I hope they love land cruisers!! This knowledge of becoming a father pushed me over the edge on the idea of swapping out the fj40 for somthing else. My wife and I both knew we wanted something bigger for our small island adventures. I knew my Fj40 days were numbered. I asked My wife Rachael one thing. Can I get something old again..... and she said yes. If you followed my Saltwagon build you know that I had been thinking on a fj55 for some time.
I had mentioned to my friends Jonathan, Mark, and Kathryn - AKA
@Shyrock and
@theglobb (the people I got the salt wagon from) that I was wanting to possibly trade the fj40 for a fj55. and behold below they had one and agreed. I should be picking it up in a couple of weeks. So the cruiser in question is a 1971 fj55. Known issues: engine had a knock... and some rust in typical spots. We had a solution to the knock more on that in a second. It also came with some body panels that I will need.
Last weekend I went for a visit to get things started and to hang out and talk land cruiser. I also wanted to see the land cruiser in person just to be 100% on the trade. I know you are thinking this is going to be a bad idea since it has an engine knock.... but... You see they had a spare 2f and 4speed. The only problem was It was already in another fj55! So the plan was to go hang out and swap an engine and transmission over the weekend! Dont worry we succeeded!

Crawling out from removing drive shafts and shift linkages. Looking Like a coal miner seeing light for the first time.

@Shyrock is Cheesing behind me! Of course I look like a lunatic. Witch I think I might be for taking this project on. But hey I am a glutton for punishment on these things....

OSHA approved footwear. Look a F and 3speed out! hardest part really was the shift linkage and getting the transmission to lift out of rear bell housing frame mounts. After we got the engine and transmission out we took the 55 and loaded it on a trailer and took it to a car wash. to degrease it. Then called it a day.

We pulled the 2f and 4speed out of this green 1976. ITs Amazingly rusty. the middle part is fine but the top and bottom is completely rusted out. I mean it might be too far gone to restore. really just a parts truck. The 2f does run though so we yakned it out. This rusty fj55 looked like a early 2000s build. the interior is in good shape. had some cool vintage SOR stuff in it. and a TLCA sticker from 2006.

Unfortunately I did not get any good photos of us pulling the engine out of the green one. But it went much smoother since we knew what we needed to do at this point. the best part of this swap is the h42 4speed. I will miss my 40s 3 on the tree but this 4speed Will be really nice. I had to think really hard about the 3 verses 4speed. It came down to not having a clutch kit at my disposal. And knowing that 3speed fly wheels, pressure plates and clutches are more money than the 2f stuff. below we struggled getting the heavier h42 in position.

we did manage to seat it with lots of prying and use of a floor jack. I still stand by that istalling with trans attached is easier than with it not attached and having to lift it in position like i did with the 40.

This is pretty much where we left it and I ran out of time and had to be back on Ocracoke. We put the drive shafts from the 76 in the back so I will Install those when its back here on ocracoke. and I need to lots of little things like installing the water pump, radiator, wiring, it needs hoses and a battery too.
I do have questions for the general land cruiser community. I am planning on running the weber carb on this one. mostly because I know it clears the hood on the early fj55 hood. but I am trying to figure out the radiator situation. The 2f water pump seems to be too long for the radiator in the earlier fj55. Do you all think a 1f water pump will solve this problem? It looks to be alot shorter almost 2 inches and I think I only really needed about an inch of space. what did you all do? any other 2f swapped early fj55 people out there?
My other question was with the u joints on the 1976 drive shaft. It seems none of the cups have the retainers c clip thins. is that a factory thing or a special ujoint cup? it was like this below for front and back driveshafts.
