Yea….unfortunately I have this issue when building motors and trans/tcase items. Less so on chassis parts….but i don’t do customer vehicles.

Made more room for my HZJ74 in my garage!.....It fit before but its roomier now....To accomplish this I actually sold something....Sold this '67/68 Dormobile.....Call me a flipper, we only owned it for 27 years....Hmmmm, on closer inspection my wife doesn't appear to be too sad to see it go:D! Its headed to Alaska.

I should see my bucket truck after an annual. The guy that does it probably goes through 2 paint pens😂

Water temp (~93 degrees F) at 6:00pm on a Land Cruiser that’s been parked in a garage all day. 😩

Charles,
Had a somewhat similar connection this afternoon ... Spent the day completing some maintenance on the 70, including an oil change. When I poured the 40wt in, it ran like 0wt or even worse -water. I stopped and rechecked that I hadn't picked up the wrong container. I had the right container. It was just a warm shop.

And we have all of August in front of us.

No sure if its 70 build. More like kitchen cabinet. Been working on the ‘built in’ National Luna fridge and countertop. I want the counter to be an integral part of the fridge top so when it’s closed we have a semi continuous surface. Routed the bottom of the counter and embedded two steel plates powder coated white and threaded for the latches and hinges. Then Sika to the counter. Then the gull window latches were interfering so more routing.

Hey gang -
Yesterday installed a front mount air to air Garrett intercooler on the 1996 KZJ78. Routed the pipes through the old horn spaces and through the back. Bought a throttle adapter (Trundles/NZD) for the connection to the air manifold on the passenger side and it came out really clean. Pic attached.

Everything is hooked up and clamps are tight. I start her up and she has a really rough idle and black smoke coming out of the tailpipe. This never happened since i’ve owned her. I went back and tightened the clamps, and ran soapy water over pipes to detect if any leaks. Couldnt find any.

NOTE: i have an EGR delete. Removed it last year. I do not have a manual boost controller or boost gauge installed.

I am hoping it is something simple. I recently gave her an oil change and also installed new A/C hoses, but dont think that would be it. The only thing i can think of is the intercooler is a bit more than i need, but an oversized airflow wouldnt do it, would it?
I read that if airflow is too much the computer might need to be reprogrammed. I am not an electrical expert; Is that a realistic solution or even possible for this vehicle?

Has anyone run into this problem? Or know enough to advise what this might be or what I should do next?

Thanks guys

New weatherstrip for the FRP top today.... well tomorrow,
Found some minor cracks in the FRP top as I removed the old weatherstripping, nothing structural but why not make it a bit better before I seal er up again?
I'm no fibreglass guy but I have repaired a few hulls and delaminated Laser sailboats,
So I made a trip to the local marine store to get some repair materials, that's curing tonight (only 1 of the patches pictured below),
and I'll continue with new rubbers tomorrow

@NJ KZJ78 did you do the install yourself or a shop? Is your egr still intact? Sounds egr or vacuum related to me.

I installed a front mount Intercooler on my Kzj78 and no rough idle or smoke. But I ditched my egr system when I first bought my truck

i did an egr delete a year ago. No issues. Obviously the rougher feel when you turn off the vehicle since the egr delete but that is not what we are experiencing here.

It’s me and a 40yr vet diesel mechanic working together on it. We dont have a manual boost controller installed. Do you think that the oversized intercooler is giving off too much “ie excess” boost at normal idle/low throttle, thereby the ecu is letting out too much fuel and the fuel/air ratio is causing the black smoke/rougher idle issue?
I am wondering if installing a boost control and manual boost controller will temper it down and re-regulate? Thoughts?

no... the intercooler will do the opposite it will decrease your boost by 1-3 psi generally across the core, yes it will be denser air but this is happening after the map/maf ecu (sensors) so it will only make it run cleaner
boost controller will not help the way you are thinking, you are just going to introduce another set of variables and the cards are out the window after that

i suggest bypassing the intercooler to trouble shoot first
if it is still doing this then you have a data point, ie you changed something else and it aint the intercooler

Thanks. So what do you suggest?

Is it possible there’s some air blockage somewhere? Something stuck inside the intercooler? Just spitballing here.
Suggesting bypassing the intercooler and seeing if symptoms persist.
