Basically instead of alligator clips clamping to the terminals, I'm installing "permanent" connections to the terminals. On the terminal end, an eyelet connector, and the other a quick-connect with cap. 20A fused <2ft cable.

There are two variations of those leads. One with 6mm eyelets and one with 10mm eyelets. They have 20 amp fuses in them. I replaced them with 10 amp fuses so they will fail easier if accidentally shorted.
 
I must have an older Gen5 x2. No X-Connect and everything is hardwired. 7.5 amp fuses with 10mm eyelets. Doesn't look like they offer just the 10mm clips. tempted to buy NOCO - X-Connect Battery Clamp - GC014 - https://no.co/gc014 just for the clippys and my laziness.

If yours is indeed 10mm I could send on the other bits to you @sark

That's probably a good idea to swap to lower amperage fuses. I have the 6mm and 10mm eyelets as well to compare, and I found that the 10mm are quite large unless you find a good spot for them. The 6mm fit much nicer around the stock bolts that secure the terminals IMO. Both would work of course but obviously depending on what size bolts you're using. Maybe throw a washer in there if needed too?

Also, to correct my earlier post, I have the 2x2, not the 5x2 unit.

Military style and some aftermarket terminals will have 3/8 or 10mm attaching points. Sounds like you have the same charger I do. I'm very happy with mine.
 
ya you dont need to isolate them, just do one at a time
 
Any opinions on a battery balancer for regular use of a 24V rig?
I have a BJ73 3B with one battery sitting on each side, so quite a long cable to connect those. They certainly are not charging balanced.
I had a battery balancer installed when I replaced my batteries 4 years ago. But it left the chat after 3ish years. Probably didn't like the heat and vibrations under the bonnet. Debating myself to fit a new one 🤔.

They can be charged simultaneously with a multi-bank charger. I've used that method for 11 years.

This is what we are doing. The NOCO multi bank chargers maintains the individual batteries simultaneously and individually.

My batteries are on the same side, but the cables are plenty long enough to reach both sides if your rig. I have the charging unit mounted on the wall of my garage, front and centre of my 73.

didnt realize they had multi bank chargers, but you could write a book about the s*** i dont know
 
built the shop so i could buy one of these....
 
It warmed up to a balmy -13, so I got out to do some work. The soundproofing on the floor near the barn doors kept chipping and flaking off as I was working on the bodywork in the back. So, I got a little frustrated with it and took my scraper and hammer to it.

In about 20 minutes it looked like this…

It was pretty loose and came off in large pieces. I’m not sure if or what I’ll do to replace it. I found it interesting that it covered two holes, one on each side near the back of the wheel wells. There was a little bit of rust on the inside that I’m going to treat them from up top, as the gas tank is directly underneath. Does anyone know what they are there for?

My current goal is to replace my battery cables/terminals with something better, incorporate their quick-connect eyelets to plug into for charging, and I'm also trying to see if I can add a disconnect switch to the full circuit. That way I can use that instead of having to undo the connection at the terminal whenever I need to work on electrics. Does this all make sense? I'm no electrical engineer so I'm open to thoughts.
