Solid Axle Summit 9: big success. New motor performed flawlessly. My only minor quibble is that with the already lower vacuum and high altitude cutting the vacuum even further, the brakes were a bit soft at times. Not dangerously so, but just a little. But man oh man does the new motor pull up long grades better. It’s still a 2F but it’s a world of difference. It’s got over 2000 miles on it now and it feels better every day.
With mechanical problems not plaguing the trip this year (as they have in the past) we were free to just enjoy our time. The weekend prior we ambled our way to Ouray on dirt, starting in Saguache, coming down Slumgullion Pass for a brief bit of pavement dropping into Lake City, then over Cinammon Pass, into Silverton, and the final stretch on Highway 550 to the Ouray KOA. That area between Saguache and Lake City is some of the most beautiful country that Colorado has to offer and it seemed very lightly traveled. We’ll be back there for sure.
Once in Ouray we were off to the races Monday. I think our trail list was:
Corkscrew Pass
Gladstone
Velocity Basin
Owl Creek Pass
Wetterhorn Basin
Imogene Pass
Lime Creek Road
Bolam Pass
We definitely hit some oddballs this year, trying to venture out and explore more of the area. Good grief the San Juans are beautiful. More folks seemed to dabble in Owl Creek Pass as well. Karen and I have been camping up there for a few years and it’s no surprise the secret is out.
Of course it was nice seeing the homies, and also great meeting new folks as well. Now it’s time to get the 40 ready for next year.
Even the stickers we made were a hit. Karen hand-drew all of this, including doing all the lettering one at a time. It really does feel like summer camp, we were sad to leave.
