Was deal thread, now TJM locker install thread

I got a similar deal on ebay a couple months back $570 incl very fast shipping. I had the front locker 168PL22 and an ARB CKMA12 ($250 incl shipping) installed for $785. Everything the shop needed to perform the install parts wise was included between the locker and compressor. Except one VERY important thing. My TJM locker required a special pipe tap, that was pretty hard to find in the US. But rather common in Great Britain and India, maybe some other places. I think it was a BPT 19x1/4, if I remember correctly.

The locker and compressor combo have been great. I use the compressor all the time, not only to air up, but around the house for bike tires, basketballs etc. Very handy. The locker operates seamlessly. Flip the switch on and it engages almost instantly, flip it off and it disengages within a blink as long as the locker is not under load. I had it sitting on the counter in my garage for a week before the install, wow, what a nice piece! The construction quality is exact. After you see and feel the fragile OEM 2 or 4 pinion carrier and you see this, you will feel much more confident about the already amazing reliability of these vehicles.

Two days before I found the TJM locker, I was ready to purchase a Harrop E-locker, which I believe to be an awesome locker. Problem is that it was going to be about $2400 all in incl shipping and installation of the locker. I would still need a compressor for airing up (and installation of the compressor). I saved myself perhaps $1200, if you count the compressor. In researching all the few front locker options available for the LC100, I found a lot of interesting info. Most interesting of all is that TJM lockers have probably been around longer than the industry stalwart ARB air lockers. How so? TJM actually bought another company named after Jack McNamara . By talking via email with a few vendors in Australia, some told me that ARB lockers were actually a copy or were "inspired by" early versions of the "Jack Mac" locker (as they called it). If you speak with people down under about the TJM and "Jack Mac" lockers, they are very well regarded. As a matter of fact, I could not find even one first hand account of one of these lockers actually breaking. This was over a couple weeks of somewhat casual research and a few personal messages.

Very cool. I remember reading somewhere that the pro lockers had been around for awhile.

I'm getting my front and rear lockers installed for $1060 mid January. I'll have to install the compressor myself to save $400 but it seems pretty straight forward. Would you mind confirming what the part you needed was? I'd like to relay that info to the shop I'll be using.

The only part number I have are the ones in my post above. As for the special piece, the pipe tap, it is just what is known as a 'British pipe tap' or 'BPT'. Size I had to search for was a '19 by 1/4'. It is an archaic standard of pipe tap used, in this case, to tap into the axle housing for the actuator connection. This type of pipe tap, I am told, used to be rather prolific around the globe, but is now "old hat". When I first began searching I could only find the size BPT needed readily available in India and Great Britain. No kidding. Ended up ordering it from a place in Canada. Don't remember the name of the place.

I am curious to where they are made, I am not a fan of some imported parts Japanese I trust most others I run, and the warranty thing I'd rather spend a few more dollars and have piece of mind, than bothering with a warranty issue I have bad luck so I really play it safe

I got the front pro locker Thursday, it's one heavy chunk of metal machinery for sure. It looks solid and the locking collar moves very freely. In looking at the instructions and the parts kit, I noticed that the bulk head fitting that passes the copper air tube thru the housing is much larger than 1/4" and is not a tapered thread. Check this out in your kit, you might find the same this or not.

I would like to know.......what Toyota part numbers would be in a full 99 front diff rebuild list assuming the locker goes in?
Who has done this rebuild at the same time?

Note: The tjm locker comes with two bearings and sleeves.

Also with the front axles out and diff out is it much easier "like a cake walk" to change out the steering rack bushings?

Just picked up the Rear Locker from Summit. Only 2 rears(168PL02) left and 6 fronts(168PL22). If anyone is on the fence the rears may not be available much longer.

Did you guys end up receiving the correct parts you ordered? I'm looking at the various adds Summit has and looks like the information is mixed up throughout them!
Front is 30 and Rear 32 splines correct?

What shop did you use? (I'm up the coast in Ventura, so am generally in the same area!) The $785 sounds like a good price!

My install price was very low. I was quoted about $1500 from 4wheelparts to install just the locker. And a couple other shops wanted about $900 to $1100, again for just the locker. I had mine done at J&S Gear in Huntington Beach. Very nice Australian guys. Be forwarned, he told me after the install that he would definitely charge more in the future because it was more of a PITA than he thought. Took them 2 days to get it 100%, but it has worked flawlessly since the install.

It appears that everyone is now out of stock on the rears.... I should have ordered last night. :(

Which lockers are Japanese? I know many come from China, I am sure most anything that comes from Japan will be better than Chinese. I am pretty sure TJM lockers are made in Australia. I know several of their vendors in AU claim they are made locally. I actually sent an email to TJM yesterday to confirm myself. No reply yet. I do know for a fact that the company that was purchased by TJM called 'Jack Mcnamara differentials' manufactures their lockers in Australia. I will post here if I get a reply from TJM.
