Can a 9.5" carrier out of a front fj60 or rear fj80 axle be fitted to an fj80 front axle. The benefit would be the strength of the larger ring gear with the strength of the fj80 birfields as well as the 80 width. They use the same 1.5" diameter 30 fine spline axle shafts so the only thing I can see being a problem is the axle housing itself. I don't have access to an 80 front axle so I can't check this out. Anybody now where this is possible? If so this setup with longfields and an oem e locker would be the ultimate toyota front axle!!

No.

Just put longfields and PIG inners in a regular 80 front axle and cryo the gears. I think that would be the ultimate toyota front axle. Oh yeah, that's why I built one! :D Now if only there were steering solutions for this axle it truely would be the ultimate toyota front axle.

*cryo and heat treat* the gears. the heat treat should greatly improve the strength. or at least thats what ive gathered over the years

Is this what you mean by steering solutions?

ewwwwww, ahhhhhhhhhh them looks perrty!!

I buddy has an 80 center with custom tubes that take mini outers and birfs. He has the best of both. The only catch are the custom made inners. Break one and he's done.

I have the OTT arms on my 80 front axle and they are a strange combo.... The OTT arms aren't high enough to clear stock leaves, and they aren't really long enough for good mechanical advantage. It is a tough decision to spend the money when it isn't sure to work.

At $800 for the setup with a lengthy turn around time and the fact that they're rumored to be discontinued, I don't really consider them a viable solution.

They look nice, but if I'm gonna spend that kind of cash, I'll go full hydro.

Actually the shafts are closer to 1.31" with 30 spline axles, 1.5" is 35 spline territory. You could have Diamond Axle build you the housing anyway you want, 9.5 center with 80 outers. The problem is still the steering arm solutions.

why not do what they do in aus and transplant a patrol 4.11:1 front diff center into the 80 housing... no toyota crown wheel woes then

Why would you do that? The 80 series birfields are one of the best things about the axle!?

Right, the 80 series birfields look gigantic next to the 40/60 series birfs. So if you could get Long's new 80 longfield, that would be the ultimate in strength and prob even stronger than d60 u-joint since the regular 30 spline longfields are comparable. The weakness at that point would be the small 8" mini size ring gear. Does anybody know if the 80 seires third member bolt pattern is the same as the 40/60's?? If so then the housing itself, sized for the 8" gears may or may not be able to be shaved or modified enough to fit the larger third. If not then a custom housing would need to be made such as from Diamond Axle or whoever.

40s/60s third member use a 9.25" ring gear. Bigger stuff then the 8" front 80 stuff.

Dude, your question has already been answered. And the answer is no.
