Thats why you can use Dunkin Donuts glaze to fill the seams, it will freeze in place and not let water in

donut glaze is west epoxy and powdered sugar. ;)

As any cardiologist how well it hardens arteries LOL

when i got back from uwharrie today, i started cleaning off all the mud and noticed this leak:

looks like the pinion seal? i just drove around a bit more and it doesn't seem to be an active leak. i haven't used my 4wd in a bit and wondering if that might have played a hand in it?

So, i ended up having to put a second fuel pump on the 380 because the one that looked new was dead. Seeing as the filter is right there with the pump I replaced that as well. The old one dumped out some truly nasty crap. i also replaced the rear sway bar connectors as the old ones were shot. Tightened up a couple exhaust bolts and low and behold, all the rattles are GONE!

We took her out for a top off cruise and ended up driving around the country side trying to get lost for a couple hours. I can not recall the last time I did that and had as much fun. I LOVE THIS CAR!!! We both love it so much we made the final decision today, we are buying another one and building out the worst of the two so we can keep the other as a driver. If all goes well we'll buy another when the built one sells and start the process all over.

I am truly a happy man :)

Improvements on my FJ40 continue. Knowing my limitations for talent and time and my lack of the proper tools, I decided to hire someone for the next round of upgrades.

The first picture is of how the truck looked when JP (@ClemsonCruiser) picked her up a few weeks back. I’d removed the blower motor in preparation for the Vintage Air install. The picture below it is the after shot, fully de-smogged and with the Vintage Air, Holley Sniper EFI and DUI dizzy installed. Among other things I asked JP to fix the exhaust leak(s), adjust the valves and repaint the air cleaner while he was in there, and he surprised me by polishing the valve cover and cleaning up the intake and exhaust manifolds.

In the third picture you can see the Vintage Air in place of the factory heater, its control knobs in the dash, and the Sniper display is temporarily in my phone holder.

I’ve logged over 3 hours and 150 miles of mixed driving since picking her up (most of was taking the scenic route home from North Augusta) and I’m loving it. It’s so incredible to drive around in 90+ degree heat with the windows up and feel cold air blowing.

JP is branching out from only doing nut and bolt restorations to doing work like this. I highly recommend him if you’re like me and lack the skills, time, tools and patience for multi-banana wrenching jobs.

Oh man......I'm super jealous @FJinTegaCay !! Looks like JP did a great job. I'd love to add A/C to mine, but I've had the hard top off for a couple years, so I don't know if it would make much sense for me, since I don't plan on putting it back on. Next up on mine, other than trying to figure out a pesky stumbling issue I can't seem to get rid of, is adding power steering. I have most of the parts, just not the time or energy.

Thanks! I drove it again today and the A/C after my 90 minute mountain bike ride felt wonderful. I used to dread driving it on a hot summer days, but that chapter has closed. I hope for a soft top one day, but I need to address a fair number of things beforehand.

I’m still very pleased with the electric assist power steering. If installing the parts you’ve amassed will require you to make a lot of modifications, you should consider selling them to fund an electric assist set up from City Racer as it would serve you well and look stock.

The Holley Sniper would likely fix the stumbling issue. ;)

Before you pull the third, replace your axle breather first. I had a similar problem a few years ago. My factory breather was completely clogged and I replaced it with a longer 1/4" oil line and a lawn power fuel filter and then ran the filter up near the fuel filler neck. My leak went away.

The parts I have are to do the mini-truck power steering, so no real major modifications necessary, but I'll check out the City Racer set up.

I'm guessing that my stumbling issue may be related to some gunk in my gas tank, so I think the best fix is to drop the tank and clean it out at some point, but I'm also not against taking a look at a good EFI setup, depending on cost.

The City Racer cost is prohibitive but compact and won’t interfere with access to the fuses.

Be careful pulling the tank and be prepared to replace the textile padding with rubber. JP replaced my fuel tank with a new OEM one as a pinhole leak was discovered after he put in the fuel return for the EFI.

Check out Mosley Motors for the Sniper kit. The owner, Cam, is on IH8MUD and helps people troubleshoot. Several good threads in 40’s tech with very favorable reviews. Let me know if I can assist in any way.

Looks like a face kinda. Making progress on Moonshine, slowly but surely. x-post from my build thread.

Check those terminals... My kids were driving the golf cart and said the battery died, so I had to pull it back home. It died alright... I assume the nut was loose?? I guess I need to check the terminals more frequently since we transport it so much. Hoping I can get away with replacing just one 🤞

So close.
Hope to have the build done by next weekend. I’ll still need to put on a few coats of epoxy to water proof and add flotation foam, but it looks like it WILL hit the water this August

Thoughts on this problem? I'm leaning towards vapor lock, vacuum leak, or fuel filter. 79 fj40, trollhole carb

Crank her up, no issue, drive an hour to el dorado outpost doing 55 most the way, no problem. As I pull into El Dorado my engine starts to sputter. Rpms and oil pressure start to plummet, I pull the choke all the way out and it still dies as I roll into a parking spot. Wait a short bit and crank it after some effort, lots of white smoke, will not stay running, even with the choke halfway out. Took off the air filter and no change. It was very bright out but it didn't look like there was any fuel in the bowl window, or it was too full and past the line.

Waited another 15 minutes or so after fiddling more and it cranks with some struggle but idles with choke part way out at 1000 rpms without dying. Decide to just drive home and not risk going on the trails. Sprayed carb cleaner around and didn't find an obvious vac leak. Still need to rent a vac gauge to test. Fuel filter doesn't look too bad, probably has 1000 miles on it. Fuel shutoff solenoid seems ok, it's a single wire one.

My carb fan does not work, I'm probably just going to hard-line it to a switch as I'm missing the temp gauge and everything on it. Any other thoughts? I'll probably replace the fuel filter regardless, but it was giving enough for to run smooth at 2500 rpms for an hour, why would it die at the end?
