I got some Amazon gift cards from work and had a little bit left over after Christmas shopping. I've been needing some new ratchets and saw the recommendations here for Gearwrench. The basic polished 3/8" in regular length (84t) was $25 and the 1/4" (same configuration) was $16. Cheaper than some of the Harbor Freight ratchets I've seen...
I Microsoft Excel all day so I'm just a weekend tinker'er but the '80's Craftsman stuff I've got is frustrating so I'm really looking forward to these. Hope I didn't make a mistake by not getting the 120xp extended length but it was an extra $24 for the pair. I'll check them out (arriving after Christmas) and exchange them if need be. Anyone compared the two before?? Is the $24 worth it for a weekend warrior?

Got the 3/8 today; 1/4 won't be here until after Christmas. I didn't have a chance to spin any nuts/bolts with it but the ratchet is SMOOTH. The Points of Engagement is significantly tighter than my Craftsman. I can't imagine needing anything more than this for what I do. I'm pretty sure I'll stick with this over the 120. My only concern would be reliability. My Craftsman ratchets all started out OK but are nearly useless now because of the slop and constant slipping. I'll get them swapped out for new ones on my next trip to Lowe's and throw them in a back-up tool bag.

Couple of side-by-side shots; sorry the lighting on my workbench isn't great...

So I know this has likely been covered but I didn't go digging. I got a tool roll for Christmas and now I need to get it kitted out. So here is what I am thinking should be inside, any adders or other recommendations would be great.

This is to be a general kit to keep handy for throwing in whatever I'm in.

  • Set Of wrenches metric and standard
  • Sockets, all 3 sizes
  • Ratchets
  • Screw driver set
  • General pliers
  • Pry bars
  • Hammer and drifts
Anything else?

Thanks

@JohnVee was thinking more generic with a toyota flare.

It will most likely be working on a toyota or the suzuki, but I do have an old ford F250 that is my farm truck and weekend roller, and it will most likely live in it.

If I can get this one squared away, then I may do one that is more Toyota specific in the future.

Nitrile gloves, flashlight, and a tire plug kit may not be a bad add. Crossover to all aspects of whatever you are working on. And of course zip ties. Perhaps a few butt crimps of each size.

Pb blaster, brake cleaner, rags

Line wrenches, thumb detecting nut ****ers, both standard and metric wrenches if you have room, various pliers including side cutters and long needle nose pliers at a minimum. All of those are in my tool rolls. I also fit a few socket sets.

I bought me a new (to me) tool box
I've got my old top and bottom(Snap On), my brothers old top and bottom (MAC) and a Blue Point Roll cart (filled up).
Trying to get every thing in one box.
Not sure if it's going to fit..That's a 4 ft. level on top for reference.

Ratchets for days... so I was Amazon Priming some maintenance items for my daughters car before she goes back to school and the Gearwrench 120xp stubby flex-head 3/8 ratchet popped up in my feed for thirty-couple dollars. SOLD - it arrived today and it is nice. I'm not exchanging the 84t I got but there is a significant difference in the 84/120.
I took my two Craftsman ratchets in for exchange and got one 34t and one 90t. I was pretty impressed with the 90; looking forward to the next project to see how they do!! Because the internet is for pictures:

With the new tools (and crappy weather) I cleaned up and organized some tool bags. I have a bag for each type of work (bicycle, electrical, construction, vehicle, etc.) and don't get into all of them often. I found a few rusty or stiff ones and was curious how others treat similar issues. My brother said soak them in transmission fluid (never heard that before) but I've had good luck with trusty WD-40 in the past. I have a pair of side cutters soaking in transmission fluid to see what happens... any other tips out there?

More advertising. I've used this stuff for some time for gun cleaning. I'm not sure why it took me so long to consider trying it on tools (it even says so on the label).

Amazing! Especially the really old, rusty, gunky tools. Also does an A+ job cleaning handles ... pliers, screwdrivers, etc.

I finally ran into a situation where either a fine tooth ratchet or a pass-thru ratchet would have been a lifesaver...so I bought one tool for both reasons.

I picked up a kobalt pass through ratchet set a while back...mainly b/c it was on clearance for a couple bucs. It does come in handy and I’ve reached for it in those rare but very handy situations!

A bump because, well, tools.

Remember how much fun it was playing with a floor jack when you were a kid?

I've got the 1/2" 120 tooth long handle with the swivel head. I love it so much that I bought a second one as a spare.

I bought my first (shame on me) Vessel JIS #2 screwdriver after watching @OTRAMM replace the brushes on an 80 series alternator. My alternator upgrade for the Cruiser is on hold until I figure out the best method for protecting the wire between the battery and alternator. Mr. T put a fusible link in there for a reason however #8 fusible link to match the #4 wire is hard to find unless I'm buying 500 feet of it.
