Triple Lockers and Why Would I Need Them (1 Viewer)

Parts with regear $3k-$4k
Labor $3500-$6k depending on the shop and locker type.

Completely unnecessary.

Really just depends on what you want to do with the truck ;)

I hate to admit it, but had to get it out of my system I guess. And I think it was like $5k for both lockers for my rig. Have I ever actually needed them? No. Do I use them just for funzies? Sure. Would I do it again on the next rig? Nope. A winch and traction boards would probably always be worth it to me for the peace of mind though.

ATRAC will carry you through where you will want to go. No need to spend money on fixing a problem that you don't have. There is only once case where I'm climbing an off-camber slope that is covered in red clay where a front locker will make a difference. Since I already have a front locker from a 99 model, I will use it on the 02. But this is extreme edge case territory.

@cruiserpatch i know you beat the s*** out of your LX470. Do you regret doing lockers on it and do you use them a lot?
To answer this question here's a short 45 second video:

At the time this video was taken my truck weighed 7,600 lbs  I drive a '99 which does not have ATRAC so lockers are a necessity.

I lock my rear diff every time I hit the trail (off-pavement in low range). I lock my front when I need extra traction or if I have to send it a little. Better to blow a CV than a diff.

To answer the main question behind this thread I would agree with the first two responses. If you don't know why you need lockers then you're probably not in need of them.

But I thought the point of these things was to just burn cash?

Real answer: you'll know when you "need" them. ATRAC is a beast, best to find the limits of that system first. The small pile of cash you'll need for lockers goes a long way towards putting gas in the tank to go somewhere fun.

And don't let labor costs scare you away if you're more of a DIY type. If you can do a timing belt, you can do gears. Slightly finicky, but ~$100 in tools and you're set.

^^this
you need a bumper and a winch

What do you “need” a bumper for?
95% of the rigs here don’t need half their gear to drive down a forest road to find out their favorite campsite is taken by a group of crosstreks.
I would say you need a bumper for deer but we both know they're so damn stupid they'll just run in to the broad side of the truck.

Pulling out crosstreks :meh:
to put the winch on really
4x4=needs winch or else you are fu<ked, lockers or not

All you need to do any trail at Uwharrie with an ATRAC 100 on 33's is sliders. You will likely take some body damage on the front side of Daniel regardless of whether you have lockers or not. The LC100 is wide. There's a tree on the front side of Daniel that gets most 100 series trucks that try to squeak past it.

You can have the “shtuff” but if you are not a good driver it will still not be great. The combo is where its at. Practice both. @Broski comes to mind of being very good at bringing the man and machine together.

Moot point, but having done Uwharrie you have more than enough already for all the easy and moderate trails with careful driving/spotting. Save your money for sliders as your next upgrade and it can open up some new trail options. Protect those mint rocker panels.

Is there a lot of pin striping at Uwharri? Like are the trails super narrow or no?
