I wanted to change the oil on my transfer case, which oil should I be using. It's a 94 LC with 177k miles.

M1 if you see yourself leaving it in there for a long time. If you think you'll do work to the transfer or drain it sooner than later for any reason, basically any 75w-90 will work well, and save money over the M1

I also use Mobil 1. The transfercase fluid is the most overworked fluid on the entire truck! Like the transmission it sees 100% of the engine power but unlike the transmission does it with ~2qts vs 11qts and doesn't have two external coolers like the trans. Even the differentials which use the same oil see half the power and have ~150-200% the capacity. If there is a place for high quality oil it's the transfercase.

Good point. After a good flush with dino oil, I found some Royal Purple synthetic on sale and put that in there. Sounds even happier.

Horrible analogy. In high with no reduction it builds almost no heat. Plus, the reduction of your differentials actually reduces the load on the tcase. Hit it with an IR thermometer after a drive, you'd be surprised how cool it actually is.

That said, I still run a high quality synthetic in mine, especially with the marlin gears.

Lucas gear oil for me. Good quality, not too pricey.

Pep Boys happens to have a coupon code right now (MANNY30) which makes the Lucas 80-90W less than $20/gallon. Can't beat that with a bat.

This

There's practically no heat build up in the t-case.

In fact, I've been able to finger check the level every time without burning the tip off, even after long beach journeys in low range.

I personally use conventional Valvoline, but any conventional off the shelf brand will do just fine.

I prefer not to use Synthetics to avoid potential leaks

Volvoline is exactly what I used. Fully synthetic

Amsoil full synthetic.

Amsoil, 75/110 transfercase, 75/140 front and rear differentials. All good for many years, have been changing then every year or two and have had zero issues.

This ^^^^

Lucas is very good at advertising, so that is something, other than that :meh: oil at an inflated price.
