Leave Uwharrie early to head Home for date with my girlfriend of the past 31 years or so, and wham! Boaters on the road, crap comes flying off the boat and lands on my windshield. Perforated windshield badly.
This is where I stopped with the owner of the boat, the plastic piece as protruding on top, the big hole in center the plastic went through and tried to kill me.

There was glass of everywhere, all the way to the back of the truck.

Safelite repair, safelite replace. But not on weekends. Taped plastic tarp to prevent rain from getting in, hoping they can get it replaced Tuesday. Crappppppppp
And safelite was at the jamboree and didn't we have this conversation with Kurt about 80's windshields? You just haaaad to bring it up. Seriously though man hate it happened but glad you're ok.

DUDE! That looks terrible! What the the hell hit you? Surprised from the amount of debris that the whole thing didn't come in on you, must've been a serious hit.

Make sure they don't try to reuse your gasket, they have to use a new one, and apparently it needs to be sealed with urethane:
Windshield Replacement-- replace gasket? Sealant?

holy crap is right. glad youre ok man.

That's a whole lotta glass in the cab! How did the boat owner react when he saw that he'd destroyed a rare piece of artwork?

Man, that looks serious. I am glad you guys are ok. Make sure your order the factory gasket from toyota. Old man needs a adrenaline rush every so offen to clean the arteries. Be safe

At least it wasn't the Sandinistas getting revenge, putting a mortar round into my rig!
It was a 2 lane road, 45 mph, I was doing 40 and he was 50 at least, so a hard plastic piece fell off and hit me at 90. At first I thought it was a seat off the boat, was going to hit my roof rack. Then it turn rapidly in the air and hit the windshield. I just braced, brake, and wait for it. I had to turn around and give chase, didn't know if he even saw it.
He seemed to be in genuine shock. Took pics of his license, registration, and rig, gave me a number. I had to cancel date, mama not happy. I called the number when I got home to let him know I was fine, expecting it to be a bad number, but he answered right away and seemed to be still in shock, so I talked him off the ledge. He seems like one of the few honest humans left in the world. Told me he just turned around and went home himself.

Damn Izzy, glad you're ok.

Glad you're okay, @Izzyandsue. Wow. I have a brand new OEM windshield gasket if you don't want to wait on one to arrive.
I like that! Calling that glass guys Monday, will let them know manager can get that OEM, see what they say

My face was okay, no rare art damaged!

Wow Izzy, glad you are OK.

Now thats rant worthy!

Glad you were ok Izzy. That had to be a rush. So what was the offending object? Almost looks like a fin off a wake board.

Def use the OEM gasket and make sure the installer is willing to follow the fsm to a T and glue the gasket to the body and the glass or refuse service.

Izzy, Great to see you, Eric and Johnathon this weekend and glad you are OK. I talked to Safelite at length and they told me they will send a tech with 17 yrs experience to replace my windshield. So what questions do I ask? Should I also replace/ purchase the 22 yr old gasket before I schedule the service? I got a quote of $237 from the tech at the Jambo. Does any one have a print out of the FSM for windshield replacement?

Thanks,
Kurt

Kurt,

Questions to ask

1) just one tech? Most times folks (safelite) are aware of the 80 situation they will offer to send two
2) are you going to follow FSM and glue both sides (body and glass) of gasket? If no, leave and reschedule elsewhere at this point. Dont fall for bs of we do it all the time, guaranteed not to leak, etc
3) absolutely buy the OEM gasket. Had two shops tell me how much nicer of a gasket it is than aftermarket. And it made it 20 yrs already.
4)what does $237 include? New glass, gasket, labor, warranty?
5) a tricky one. What brand glass? And what color? This one gets all kinds of opinions. Seeing as how toyota glass is 11-1400 it wasnt an option and bronze is NLA. I settled for CY glass in green (to match) and no shade banner across top. CY is Chinese but oem supplier for all new gm products so figured pretty good. Trying to find US made glass is a chore and crapshoot. Lots of time something else shows up.

Thats not a bad price for glass and labor. I paid similar and provided the oem gasket at ~45$

There's something to be said for brand new drywall installed, taped, mudded and primed by experts. It leaves you a perfectly smooth surface that practically makes love to the brush and roller as you paint. No holes to fill first. Nothing to sand.

I don't have that. I have gouges, scrapes and drips dating back to 1970. Aaaarrgggh. I need to find my pictures drive that has shots of my basement when we moved in. You'll love it. White walls with lots of red and blue splatter paint. THAT was a bear to sand and scrape before painting. Oh, and the bright green carpet down there really made it a scene.

And another thing... Where was @mtweller's 4/1 post this year??? I literally had the money in my pocket. Had to buy something else instead.

I had an elaborate scheme planned out... was going to post a "link" to Longfields or Tirerack unbelievable deal that wasn't for real. My thought was to provide a coupon code and explain I had found it and used it successfully in hopes others would be diligently trying to use the code (which is only good for 24hrs mind you).

Alas, I couldn't find a good site for the joke that accepted coupons, then I fell asleep before midnight and didn't get it done :( Sorry to disappoint.

Sorry about the windshield, I know it was a shock and happy you are okay.

A similar thing happened to me in the back roads of VA. I was working for PPG paints and was driving with a national accounts manager going to Roanoke for a meeting. When we were near Floyd, VA I noticed a shadow/dark thing just to the right of the windshield at the roof. Then a loud explosion followed by showers of glass all over the both of us. I slowed then looked in the rear view mirror to see what hit the car and all I could see was brown stuff floating over the highway. Once stopped we saw the windshield was cracked and the edge of the roof at the windshield was bent. It was the feathers in the glass that was the dead give away. We hit a turkey that was coming in for a landing. Yes, turkeys do fly!

The worst part was when I called the company insurance carrier to tell them what happened and find out if there was a PPG glass installer in Roanoke. The lady I was speaking with laughed so hard I thought she was going to loose her dentures and it took a full 5 minutes for her to regain enough composure to continue on. Cracked the windshield like yours was, bent the roof and made driving very hard.

We did follow the turkey around to the back of a house and let the homeowner know he had an injured bird under a tree. Happy Thanksgiving from your friends at PPG.
