Sad state for the country. This swift stuff. Amzing it happened right before the nfl season. They will probably get married as a superbowl halftime show. Growing up in the south with 3 tv channels (no cable or satellite available), we never watched tv really and especially not NFL. I don't watch tv now and never really nfl. I always thought nfl was designed for the cold weather states where there is nothing to do outside in the winter and everyone picks a team freaks out weekly. I join all work calls in the fall 5 minutes late. The first 5 minutes is all nfl chatter. The northern folks are all over it and I have no idea and could care less about what they are talking about. I am not against nfl, I just do not participate. I can not imagine spending hours inside on beautiful days to watch tv of any kind. Sorry got carried away on my nfl work rant and the swift bs is just fuel on the fire.

The amount of air time wasted on this engagement is insane.

I am just gonna say this - The amount of time SEC fans spend talking about college football per capita FAR outweighs the time my family spends talking/watching the Chiefs - and that doesn't even cover the time "wasted" on crappy NFL teams in the South like the Dolphins, Falcons, Panthers and Jaguars LOL. So - - I don't think this is a "Yankee" pastime only - you should pass the blame to your Southern neighbors too :)

I agree however all my co workers are up north and only talk about nfl. It amazes how much time is wasted on sports period. All sports. I know waste time on land cruisers, mountain bikes and efoiling but damn that chits important (to me). Ha.

Football, you bet. Never got into it either. Just bets with Jamie when my home town plays his home town.

I still owe you on that beating - I can't remember what we bet, though! I will have to follow up with you :)

You don't owe me a dime. You won the first time I won the second.

Sports on TV pays my bills, so the more people watch it, the better for me!

NFL?
Never heard of her.
They lost me around 2016/17. It's cool - it's given me a LOT of time to do worthwhile stuff instead of sit in front of a television watching sportsball.

Charlie Kirk was assassinated today. I do not agree with all Charlie had to say but I damn sure do support his right to say it. I liked watching his videos, conversing with kids. He actually made a difference, not just politically. He brought intelligent debate to college campuses and tried to show high school and college kids how to look at a different point of view than their own with calm conversation rather than rage and defiance. It's a sad world when people are assassinated because you do not agree with their views.

I wasn't a huge fan of Kirk, he quite often over simplified what he was trying to convey with simple anecdotal evidence but didn't realize it was a "truth" because it was tailor made for his point of view, anyone can do that for just about any view point. Had a conversation about this with someone in a bar just the other day when they brought him up and used anecdotal stories to prove points that I didn't even myself believe. But that's not here or there, I did enjoy occasionally watching him because he was mostly respectful in his debates, which is something a lot of people completely lack in this day and age. I also did agree with a few of his points even if he didn't do a good job at actually proving them. Bottom line though is violence is not the answer no one deserves to be shot down like this for the simple reason of not liking what they are saying. He wasn't inciting a riot or any kind of violence just debating.

Same here. Didn't particularly like anything he had to say, but fully acknowledge he had every right to say it. Right or wrong, he engaged people in debate that was, for the most part, respectful of the person he was debating at any given point in time. I'm very sad for his wife and kids having to lose their husband/father, especially the way it happened. Don't like what he has to say? Don't listen to him, but violence is not the answer.

I actually thought Charlie brought a LOT of statistical data and history to the debates, way beyond anecdotal evidence. He did base a lot of his ideology on conservative Christian beliefs, which is non-starter for some, but he wore that on his sleeve and wasn't shy admitting where he was based. I didn't agree with all he said, but I do think he was different than most in that he welcomed others to prove him wrong in a public forum. I'm devestated we now live in a country where violence has escalate to this level - feels like a nation about to pop. I'm also sickened by anyone celebrating a young father losing his life, with his daughter right there, and the amount of people quoting clips out of context (like claiming he said we should stone homosexuals). I hope and pray an event like this will open eyes for more peaceful discourse, but social media has created a platform for hatred, right, left and some inbetween. I sure miss the days where we were a nation that generally agreed and then simply debated nuances of how our country should be governed. The two-part system has run it's course, we HAVE to find some middle ground.

Very well said, Ramon. I strongly agree with all of that, with the only exception being that I will mention that much of Charlie's statistical data wasn't exactly......hmm, let's say....verifiably accurate, or at least was extremely cherry-picked, but that's not uncommon when people debate highly sensitive/controversial topics.

I think what has people on both sides of the political isle and most assuredly those of us in the middle miffed about Charlie Kirk's assassination is that no matter his views, he was out there talking with kids trying to get them to see other viewpoints.. I can not wrap my head around the world kids of college age have grown up in. No clue how they process information. I was born in 1960, I grew up in Mayberry, only in PA. It is starting to feel a lot like the 60s. Only the Hippies were preaching peace and love. I saw the news of RFK, MLK and Malcom X on a B&W TV when I was just a kid. Scary times indeed.

Clearly true, but it also very true that almost every group or individual in the political / social agenda realm are guilty of being fast & loose with the facts. In fact, some have demonstrated that warp speed is possible when abusing facts.

What I find helpful is the open discussion where the holes / lack of substance / lies / ... are brought into the light to be seen and assessed by each of us based on our set of values and life experiences. What is profoundly disappointing to me are all the people out there that don't take the time or make the effort to learn and understand. They prefer to be told how to think / how to vote / who to hate ... This reflects poorly on our society, our educational system and our nation. We owe our ancestors better care of this nation that they invested blood sweat self-sacrifice in to build as their legacy to us.

I would say that Kirk does not owe his ancestors a dime. He was murdered because he openly voiced alternate perspectives that some in this nation do not want voiced, so they vilified Kirk and fostered others to hate him. Final result was the murder of Kirk, when open thoughtful discussion/debate was the only need.

My father lied about his age at 16 and joined the Navy at the beginning of WWII. He fought in the south pacific. I am glad that he passed before seeing the last decade or so. It would have broken his heart.

Yep. That's why I said ".....but that's not uncommon when people debate highly sensitive/controversial topics." I certainly have my opinions on whether some individuals or groups play much faster and much looser with the facts than others, but I really don't want to get into that here because I do NOT want to mix my love of Cruisers and my (or anyone else's) political leanings.

This might be a rant thread but I will say this.

I consider myself a pretty lucky guy to be part of this group. Where we don’t have to agree with each other but we still treat each other with respect - most of the time. Hahaha, just kidding.
