'82 BJ60

BDS kit for an FJ60 (about $1200 CAD)
greaseable pins and shackles at the same time. (an additional $200 US)
Needed additional bushings that did not come with kit (I replaced ALL bushings at the same time and the kit doesn't allow for replacing the upper bushings in the shackles).
Install took about a day for the first lift I've ever attempted.
It got the back up where it should be from the "dragging butt" syndrome common to '60 series.
No complaints so far and it stood up real well on the drive from Canada to Guatemala fully loaded (depressed springs probably 2" due to load) but it popped right back up where it's supposed to be when we unloaded it. It may be slightly butt high now but I've also got the OEM porch bumper and PTO winch bringing the front down.
Will be getting pizza cutter tires when the current tires are done (tall as possible on stocker rims).

Please post up what you are running.

There are many more people out there than this who have modified their suspension!!! :)

Just trying to keep the FAQ up to speed!

Thanks!

new suspention

74 fj55
man-a-fre 4" spring/shackle kit w/ cheap shocks
from where it sat before: front up 5-6"
rear up 7"
front aprx 7 hours install
rear aprx 5 days and 15 phone calls, still not right, driving it anyways
much better ride on and off road but...
these springs are way to stiff, esp. rear. truck will flop before axle hits bumpstop
when flexing. bumpstops are lowered the 2" MAF recomended.
kit incuded springs, shocks, shackles, and bushings.

75 FJ40 SUA 37s
Custom springs - approx 3" lift. Extended shackles, extended front spring rear hangers (30mm lift). Ford towers.
self adhesive UHMW between leaves, greasable shackle pins, no clamps.
moved rear back 6", front forward 1"

VERY FLEXY!! - took two goes to get it right - but I doubt I could improve it now...

too many stickeys clog up the forum... it is linked off the FAQ

Red truck:

2.5" OME springs and shocks, longer shackles. Flexes and rides well.

post up what you have max....

(4x4 labs)

Some Lifted 40 Shock Options

Figure this is as good a place as any.

My build consists of a SR, spring under and 2.5 inch Superlift springs in the front and lifted anti-inversion shackles in the rear to even out the front. Since the truck is no where near done and attempting to flex the springs like they are was pretty tough due to lack of weight, I went ahead and did some dirty research on shocks specifically for lifted FJ40s.

Here is what I came up with in a small PDF:

View attachment Shock info 2.pdf

Hope this is helpful and please just use this as a guide before shopping, choosing and ordering and make your own decisions wisely. I have just put some info I found on the web here. Also note the date of the post should this end up hanging out in cyberspace somewhere for a couple years.

Hi All:

Thanks Hugh for reviving this thread! Surprised I had never noticed it before.

1974 FJ40 with parts from 1968 through 1978 40 Series trucks included! :D

Installed Aussie-made Old Man Emu medium/medium suspension back in 1996. Quickly modified the rear springs from OME14 to OME 140 after removing the hard top. Used OME N41 and N89 shocks and OME greaseable shackles.

The combo of the medium-load OME 13 springs up front (carrying a 2F and an electric winch) and the light-load OME140 springs (carrying next to nothing!) worked well. Got good flex, especially on the rear axle. Not a lot of lift, however. About two inches.

A few years ago (2007?) decided to copy a buddy and install OME 60 Series medium-load rear springs under the FJ40. A tight fit in the spring hangers but it works, using OME SB40 poly spring bushes to adapt the smaller 40 Series shackle and fixed-end bolts to the OME 60 Series springs.

Installing "flipped" 60 Series rears (re-drilled the spring bolt hole to allow reversing the pack) pushed the rear axle back about four inches, which of course requires messing with the rear shackles and shock mounts.. Instead of moving the rear shackle mount I simply fabbed-up some (much) longer than stock-length shackles, which actually sit at a nice mild angle offering both up and down travel. Used OME N76 shocks to replace the previous N89s.

Two years ago I built some custom front spring packs using leafs from both OME 13 and 14 springs. Re-drilled and flipped, these moved the front axle forward about two inches, so the rig now has a 100 inch wheelbase. Fitted Ford shock towers and fitted the old OME N89 shocks from the rearend.

This build might sound a bit strange, but a design limitation is the height of my garage door! :hillbilly: Oh, and my budget!

So, I have been trying to do a "LCG" and "HF" build (Low Center of Gravity and High Flex.) It runs on 33X12.5R15 bias-ply 'Swamper TSL tires and has lockers in both axles.

For anyone interested, here is the link to my "ROTW" thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/148943-rotw-josieslandcruiser.html

Regards,

Alan

EDITED FOR UPDATE: So after to talking to OME and Pro-Comp, if you are running a similar setup to what I have below, the Pro-Comp lift kit will be too soft. Your best bet is to at least run the OME heavy front/medium rear spring leak packs.

Can anyone suggest if the Pro-Comp 2.5 lift will be suitable for a rig with that much additional weight? Usage is predominantly road/fire roads. No wheeling or rough stuff.

The Pro Comp spring leafs are rated at 385lbs per leaf (2,310 per leaf pack)

The OME medium spring leafs are rated at 300-450 lbf/inch per leaf
The OME heavy spring leafs are rated at 375-496 lbf/inch per leaf.

OME suggests the heavy front springs for 110lbs+ at the front 330lbs constant load on the rear.

So, do you think that with the given changes, the Pro-Comp setup will be suitable? I'm not loaded up much more than the weight of the accessories listed.

Thanks in advance.

This is the sticky for the FAQ on lifts and only has 2 pages worth?
I'm looking for best results on what I should get for my 1976 FJ40 that has 30+ year old Man-A-Fre 2.5 lift. I'm thinking of going the OME but still doing the research which is what brought me here but this really isn't the end all be all thread for this.
