I’ll play. Found out that my PO decided to try and make his own locker. I’ve known the rear end was locked but hadn’t changed the gasket on the rear. Today I found an attempt to weld the spider gears together and then to the carrier. Didn’t go so well...

Unfortunately I’m not at a place to replace a third member this year. I welded up the spiders more and will pray during wheeling this winter.

Is it the oil, or is that brazing on the spider gears??? Looks brass colored.

Had to add this tidbit of Soooooper Genius work:

Getting ready to cut off this crap on my '68, and not only is this rear hitch welded by Helen Keller, but they couldn't even be bothered to remove the pin. I guess every little bit of safety helps.

Helen was a very good welder. She just didn't do much because she kept burning her fingers. That hitch is part of a weight distributing setup. Does it have braces to the frame or is it just a class one? Just wondering.

No braces of any kind. The receiver just goes back a few inches. This truck was used as a snow-plow at one time. Gotta cut a bunch of stuff off the front, too.

I take it back, they did brace it slightly. I hadn't looked under there since I bought the truck - been working on her front :D

I just did a locker and gear swap on my fj40. Front and rear. I have all the stock stuff in a box for both axles including spiders, ring, pinions, open carriers, etc. I can send it all to you for the price of shipping. It’s just sitting here. Let me know if your interested. They are 4.10 gears a little surface rust on the gears tho.

That's a great thought, but...with the gears welded, chances are the overburdened center pin has beaten the holes in both ends of the carrier oblong.:eek:

Where to start? My PO had the 78 2F engine rebuilt with a 74 head. Shoddy wiring throughout. Giant monstrosities welded onto the front and back of the truck. Had giant spacers on which snapped the lugs off while driving down the interstate...

This is my latest find. He just riveted a new floor pan over the existing floor. I guess to fill in a void, he used quikcrete then slathered a ton of bedliner over everything.

The driver's side is just a piece of aluminum riveted into the floor.

This is for sure a winner... just awesome in a non-awesome way.

How about these steering solutions, both on the same 40.
Bolts are overrated.......

Who wants to live forever?

I cannot fathom someone doing this to themselves or everyone else along the highway.

Booger weld winner winner chicken dinner.

Awesome and absolutely terrifying thread.

How do you pro's deal with these things with customers? I mean, at times you HAVE to refuse to work with what is there. How does it usually go?

As I said over 30 years ago, abiding principles do not mark the path you take, but the boundaries you will not cross. For present purposes, know that I rebuilt the steering and the brakes on my first Landcruiser before I put an engine in it. No temptation.

Virtually every WOS candidate in my shop has come in for other reasons, unsuspecting of their time bombs, and has had me re-prioritize their work. If I find a safety issue before I start, I just refuse to work on the truck until it is addressed. I also make a point of telling them that they don't have to hire me to do anything. But I tell them flat out I will not be a party to putting an unsafe rig back on the road. Most of the time, but not all the time, I end up fixing the junk.

I had a walk in customer stop by for a $2 door pin 20something years ago. I pulled it off the shelf as we were conversing. He asked me about the cost of a brake booster and I told him. He said he would keep it in mind because his brakes were bad. I put the pin back on the shelf.

I told him I wouldn't be a party to it. He said something to the effect that it was getting cold and he couldn't drive the truck without putting the doors on. All I said was '’good’'. He left thinking I was a total ass-@@&$. I'm sure he bought a pin somewhere else and thinks he got the last laugh. Meh. I am happy to say I don't need anyone's money that bad.

My '65 FJ45. Whenever you cut off a spring hanger and move it back 1/2" because the truck frame is bent, be sure to re-weld it using a big honkin' scab plate welded to the frame. It works better that way.

Doing a powertrain refresh on a 1970 with a 4 speed swap. Customer tells me he just had the clutch changed a thousand miles before bringing in the powertrain to me. Yeah, pressure plate and disc were new. Flywheel

This 40 stopped moving for an unusual reason:
