I'll play - I'm still undoing the PO's messes, but these were a couple of the most significant:

"Power Steering Conversion"
Yes - the cast box box was welded directly to the frame (with big, boogery welds). And it looks like all the frame modifications were done with an oxyacetylene torch and a ridiculously shaky hand:

This was attached to a steering shaft that rode on the exhaust manifold and had the slip join INTENTIONALLY WELDED to ensure full impalement if you ever got into a head-on collision...

"V8 Mod"
V8 was installed way too far forward in the engine bay, resulting in the largest dog-leg I have ever seen in a shifter, and about a 3-foot long shift throw:

Hey, at least it cleared the heater.

This is what's left of the transmission hump:

Hey also cut out that one bolt hole so that the hump clears the gas tank without having to move it.

Ahhh memories...Will be glad when all this is patched up. Right now it's in 20,000 pieces in the garage.

I've seen worse. Where there's a welder, there's a way.

I've got the welder, now I just need to figure out how to work the thing so I can get started on all this stuff!

Otherwise, I'll just be another one of these PO's

This is my PO surprise:

What started out as a simple harmonic balancer seal replacement ended up by pulling the valve train and camshaft to rid myself of this homemade POS. Bought my '73 in 1977, so OEM squirters were available for probably $5 each.

This is a small sample of what 45 years of oil leak can do... along with never washing it. If your motor is so dirty that moving parts start knocking if off... your photo belongs here.

Can we self report?

Something hokie, or something bad?

I don't know if I can put my hands on it any more, but twenty years ago Or so I rebuilt a steering box for @surfinglewdog before he sold his 45 to @bull .

Those of you familiar with the inside of a pre-73 steering box know that the sector roller bearing goes from convex to concave as it wears down. If it is neglected long enough it can actually wear thru the hard face of the bearing.

In the case of this wall of shame pillar, the PO had just such a bearing...and chose to WELD THE BEARING to the sector shaft so that the worm gear wouldn't hit the part of the sector roller that had worn thru the hard face.:eek::eek:

Standard rust prevention in BC.:p

Good excuse, but it came out of a farm truck from the prairies that was virtually rust free and never winter driven. There was 3/4" on parts of the intake... and areas that needed to have 'clay' chipped off with a chisel (including the exhaust manifold).

This thread makes me shudder!

Land Rover...?

Donor was a 72 fleetside with 72,345 miles... almost rust free, One owner, garage kept, never winter driven.

It was being hacked up... it'll soon be a short box with Edelbrock EFI, 700r, and a built 454. No longer an old farm truck.
