The Sideyard '78. Tom's FJ40 story...........

I use blue painter's masking tape to hold the weatherstrips in place while the adhesive sets. Especially useful on the corners.

See you Tuesday Tom.
Did new body mounts recently. Energy Suspension, big thanks to my bud @Jack A for all of his help and know how. My rig is quieter now @GA Architect Rick you were right on! Should have done it sooner. Just recently added a stablemate to my ‘78. Need more garage space!

Just did the Energy body mounts on my 78. The old ones were in surprisingly pretty good shape but the new ones were a great fit and easy to install. One more little thing to quiet things down.

On a side note, the last speeding ticket I got was when I lived in Prescott, in 1978, driving my 72 FJ40. Back then, there were still hitching posts in front of the bars on Main Street, usually with horses tied to them.

I have been slowly doing some things on my ‘78 as I continue to gather missing parts for my brothers ‘76. I have been cleaning up the minor surface rust on the frame and painting with a black enamel. My rear wheel wells have many bare paint areas due to rocks flying off tires and 41 years if driving around in the Sonoran Desert...

@JohnnyC well as a Arizona 40 I was blessed with only some surface rust on the frame, so easier than what most folks have had to deal with. My brothers ‘76 came from the White Mtns where salt is used on roads now in the Winter as they started doing here in Prescott just a few years ago. His ‘76 will need some metal repair. Thanks.

Question, how long do OEM fuel pumps last? I replaced mine with a new OEM one back in like 2017. Took it out for a run at highway speeds; 55-60mph and it felt like it was surging as if not getting fuel? I will first replace fuel filter. And it is due for some fresh plugs too so that is on my hit list. What does everyone think? Thanks.

OEM pump should be good for 20 years…as long as you don’t put any of that E-85 sheit in your tank.
Surge could be patrtially clogged pickup screen, air getting into a fuel line, or partial vapor lock.
#3 is the easiest to test: try driving with the gas cap off and see if it makes a difference.😉

Thanks for this Mark, have some “diagnosing” to do, how have you been? Tom

I try to post how things are going for me every few weeks in my warehouse fire thread Tom. Just did another 46 mile training ride Monday. Carb rebuilds are still keeping me busy at work…when I feel like working.😉

That is a healthy run in a 40👍 As things cool here in fall winter I have plans for a few runs here in Arizona. One is our Copper State Cruisers Classic Cruise 5, the first weekend in October at Montana Mtn east of Phoenix. It is a sky island with the summit up over 5000 ft, should be nice and cool. Also will explore our Prescott National Forest backroads up above a mile high as well.

Your a braver man then me if on any thing that allows motorized traffic. I no longer drive a FJ40 in city traffic. Everything I own is a framed Toyota 4X4. Things get much worse in the Phoenix area thinking a Land Cruiser that been armored for places like Bagdad is going to be needed. Between wrong way drivers on the freeway and road rage shootings just not a safe place to be driving a small unibody hybrid.

Getting ready for the hardtop install; so today began the fun of scraping off 38 year old door seals........................ Are these the right tools for the job? Took like 4 hours to get the door surface nice and clean. How much of the black adhesive should be used when applying the new door seals? Will put up more pics..............

So how did this work on removing old weatherstripping adhesive? Just bought a can and any adhesive that was not under weatherstripping this has had no effect on softening it up. Doors are almost fifty three years old with original paint and no rust. Not going to us any metal scraper.

I used a 3M wheel on a drill to remove old adhesive. I used it on the fiberglass top, was tedious but kind of a game changer as to how long it would have taken without the 3M wheel. Remind me John, I will send a pic on PM. It worked great!!!

Also used 3M adhesive remover to remove old adhesive/molding combined with plastic panel tools from China(Harbor Freight).

Any place the weatherstripping was tight to door adhesive came off easy. Any space the weatherstripping had a gap or spread beyond the weatherstripping the adhesive is like a rock. Paint is original and do not want to scratch getting adhesive off.

It was some work moistening the old adhesive and gently working it with plastic scraper, time consuming but worked for me.

Popsicle sticks. Another tip from my Chinese cousin: Lo Tec.😉

Probably work better if I pulled the doors so they lay flat and let the Rover soak. Do not think the doors have ever been off and I'm not going to be the first. Cap was removed from the sides to replace the headliner. Who did was rather sloppy. Also used the old weatherstripping put back in pieces. That has been replaced with new OEM weatherstripping. Sure the weatherstripping between the tub and sides are old as well but not touching those. It lives in an insulated garage.
