Re routing the exhaust pipe was a little tricky as I have heard to not run them out the back due to fumes. So my only concern is on big bumps the 33” tire could hit the pipe during its upward and rearward travel. Opinions appreciated..

@troy scott my girlfriend bought them for me. They came from City Racer, LLC. He is on here as Racer 65. They are a reproduction of old school flaps that I believe Toyota sold mainly in foreign markets. @JohnnyC could probably give us some history. They are nice and thick and a true flap so to speak. They do require a universal style mud flap bracket that I needed to mod a bit to get the length correct so they don’t hang out past the side of your tub.. Aries is the name of the brackets I believe, found them in either Amazon or Fleabay. I like period correct stuff and an OEM style look. Next thing I want to fix up is an old Confer Rack.

@1973Guppie cool website you have. I bet the weather in San Diego is great now? Crazy hot in Phoenix but cooler up here in Prescott.

Beautiful Cruiser! Who's 40 is that on the left?

@lenmn My brothers ‘76 and most likely my next project. It is mechanically very good but needs rear sill, quarters, paint, etc

Anyone have any advice on how I re-routed the exhaust pipe?? Opinions wanted. Thanks.

No opinion, just a photo of the original exhaust. Might help!

Hard to tell exactly, but my exhaust is routed similarly (possibly slightly more rearward) and has witness marks from tire contact. Nothing that has caused any problem, but between articulation and the exhaust hangers bouncing around they at least make contact in my case.

I have a 76 that still has the original exhaust which should be real close to 78. I also bought a OEM 79 muffler for my 79. Found the missing pieces to bring it back to stock. What is currently on is not far from stock but looks like something generic.

Personally would prefer the exhaust behind the mudflap at the back corner. Then possible something used to stiffen the mudflap from flying up and hitting the exhaust.

Thanks guys, so in my case routing it at an angle out back may not be the worst idea?! Want to avoid tire hitting it, not that I am a rock crawler or anything.

No harm in finding a place to flex it out a bit to see if it looks like it will be an issue because it's a function of so many things?

Your current setup looks like the tailpipe is almost touching the bracket for the mudflap. If the muffler/tailpipe is hung with rubber vibration isolator it will move and possible rattle if it hits the bracket. It will be close enough to the the bracket to transmit heat to it and mudflap. Not sure of your current setup but probably won't be hard to use a 79+ muffler/tailpipe. Fairly easy for me, all I have to do is install the three bolt flange on the exhaust pipe to mate to the stock muffler. Had a 60 series muffler I need to cut off the inlet flange to go to a two bolt flange for my FJ62. Original isolator is NLA but the style used is available. Just need a simple bracket to bolt to the frame. Got lucky my 82 frame while rubber isolator had broken off the metal bracket part was still there.

I've heard the 76-78 muffler was NLA but Amayama shows it available. Besides the cost to ship from Japan I have had no luck with them actually having the part I was looking even though they said it was available.

Did this yesterday and wasn't even sure worth posting. If you need help with stick route routing let me know. Searching see my 10/75 76 model is different than the 12/75-1/79 but should be very close. Depending on your muffler inlet pipe location 79+ might be a good option. The tailpipe mount is superior to the 75-78.

Decided to re-route the pipe out back with a slight turn down. Hopefully no fumes. No worries now with full articulation having tire hit pipe.

Only time I ever had issues with fumes was on my 68 when I would open the hatch and rest it on the spare tire. The main reason I installed the small vent windows from a wrecked 78 hard top. Can still see the scars in the weatherstripping from when the 78 slide on its side. Had to buy new large glass that was cheap thirty-five years ago. Small window were fine except one of the latches was broke. Personally in AZ the vent windows are almost a must with a hard top. Not sure how the sliding windows Australia got would fair. Advantage of those is they do not stick to get hit by branches.

I agree John. Mine rattle but a friend of mine Pat up here found a trick to stop the rattling when they are open. Are you planning on doing Casner Mtn with the club in October? Darlene and I are planning to Camp our with the club. Would be nice to see another 40.

Did new body mounts recently. Energy Suspension, big thanks to my bud @Jack A for all of his help and know how. My rig is quieter now @GA Architect Rick you were right on! Should have done it sooner. Just recently added a stablemate to my ‘78. Need more garage space!
