I just wanna say SCORE on the winch. I ended up buying a used m8000, and then bought a new 24 V motor from warn (and that wasn't cheap). It seems like warn stopped selling the 24 v version of this winch? I would have gone with ramsey (available in 24 V, and they too have good replacement parts support) if I didn't find a good deal on this used one.

more to update to the thread that I haven't posted, just been busy. a quick update that's pretty cool, @svsisu texted me saying he'd be in the area. We have met a couple of times but his troopy has been out of commission each time, as was mine once. Finally got to get the 2 red North Carolina troopys together!!!! Man what a good feeling. Was a great day of showing him those abandoned iron mines I posted about earlier aswell as a couple cool campsites in the area.

We traded troopys for 30 minutes or so. Night and day difference... meaning his is absolutely magnificent to drive, the most notable improvements were power steering and a clutch that doesn't feel like you're operating a massive piece of heavy-duty mining machinery to push in. My clutch is stupid stiff since I upgraded to the bigger bore master cylinder and having power steering is always a sobering reminder of what the troopy could (and will) be like one day. However I'm very pleased in the performance of the Isuzu 4BD1T vs the 1HZ-T, I didn't beat on his car and floor it out of respect but from what I can tell the Isuzu 4BD1T pulls just as good if not better than the 1HZ-T with lower EGT's going up hills. Assuming this is cause the 4BD1T is direct injection vs IDI and has a factory turbo on it aswell.

I've had nothing to compare the troopy engine swap to until now and I'm just excited that its just as fast if not faster than a 1HZ-T.

Was an awesome day

Such a fun day! And I had a smile on my face from the moment we met up at the Family Dollar until we split off in different directions in front of that sheriffs deputy.

100% agree that box truck motor of yours pulls better, crazy how much torque it has and how quick it would jump to. Do you even have EGTs?That 4BD1T motor is such a good compliment to the troopy and you did a fantastic job mating the two. But your clutch 🤣 I can’t remember the last time I almost stalled a vehicle. That thing is heavy, and I hope you never kick me with your left boot. So much fun to drive the red rocket, and so different. Thanks again for the awesome day!

"...heavy duty piece of mining machinery..."
Dude I think you're talking about a Land Cruiser? ;)

Looks like a great day.
It’s more like a Cat 797… that being said I’ve never drove one obviously, but it is pretty hilariously stiff.

I got in the other troopy, pushed the clutch down and thought it was full of air… nope totally fine, just how Toyota intended it to be and then some 21 year old had to come in with the Amazon special master cylinder and ruin it all lol

I’m going to assume no, but does your troopy have a clutch booster? If it is stupid hard to push the clutch in, I would keep an eye on the brackets for the clutch pedal inside the cab To make sure it doesn’t crack.

Also I’m not surprised at all the 4bd1t feels like it has more torque/power than a 1HZ(t)

4bd1t 3.9l DI, 135hp, 243tq
1HZ 4.2l IDI, 130hp, 210tq

Now I know his is a 1HZ-t but without specs/boost hard to figure out power. I’m guessing with turbo his numbers are slightly higher than yours, but the feel will be absolutely different in terms of power delivery.

Both good engines for red troopys. 😂

I used to think that white was the Troopy color, but now I could definitely be convinced to go with a red one as well
I think the white painted roof really completes it

I have no experience in a Cat 797, but pushing on that clutch felt a lot like how hard I would have to stomp on the brakes of a Cat IT loader while launching a 10 meter RHIB

Good to see the facts don't disagree with the subjective butt dyno! What I would really like to see are the 15BF-T specs and how it compares to the 4bd1t. If the 15BF-T and 4bd1t have similar specs and I owned a 3B powered 70 series I would be doing all I could to get an easy swap in Toyota DI engine. The power delivery of the the isuzu motor was crazy perky. It felt like there was always power to spare, and would make a great towing vehicle, and the fact that it is direct injection is icing on the cake.

My 1Hz was rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago, so is pretty fresh, the turbo is a very laggy CT-26 that needs the boost turned up and probably needs to be rebuilt. I'm actually planning on putting a Holset Hx30 on instead, and it will be very interesting to see how that changes things. Our trucks probably weigh the about same, neither of us have a bunch of broverlander stuff but we each had all the random dumb s*** that accumulates in trucks that are used as daily drivers. Both trucks have front ARBs, his has a winch, I have a rear bumper with swing out and spare, he has a super simple and nice, low profile home made bumper and no spare, he has all 4 side jump seats, christmas lights, an inverter (for the christmas lights) and a PA system for his weekend party people hauling duties; I only have one jump seat and no christmas/party lights, but I did have 4 gallons of oil, a bundle of paper towels, a case of beer, and a bunch of sea shells, sea glass, and rocks that I tend to collect. We both have blue tooth speakers and no stereo, his is red and bigger. He has 33" tires and stock gearing, I have 35" tires and 4:1 tcase gears, which give about a 10% lower gear ratio in high range. Makes the RPMs a little high on the highway, but really perfect for windy mountain roads.

So, similar trucks yet very different, both super fun. I can't wait until we meet up again for further comparisons and good times.

the day before we met up I did the first oil change, 5,000 miles on the swap now. The 4BD1T has 2 oil filters on it, a normal full-flow oil filter and another smaller one that is constantly slowly sucking some of the oil away to filter it down to 3-5 microns I believe. People say you can go 20,000 plus miles on an oil change, especially if you're running full synthetic. I think I'm gonna stick to 7,500-8,000 miles just for my own conscious, and I'm only running semi-synthetic. A pretty big oil change coming in at 10 quarts.

Keeping my front ujoint well lubricated lol

I'm also using an allen head drain plug meant for diffs and trannys due to clearance issues with the driveshaft, thus now I have a magnet to check whenever I drain the oil. No idea if this is a lot of wear or not, I'm not too concerned just cool to see and to be able to compare with in the future.

Thank you, TOTAL SCORE!!! I was looking into sherpa winches out of AUS, but that was gonna be way in the future. Then this one just stumbled up locally, crazy chance.

I really don't mind the red! I'd say the only issue is if you want to kinda blend it there is now 0 chance. Troopy's are odd for people to see for the first time in the states and now its RED ontop of that. Everything I do, everywhere I go, someone I know sees and is talking about it. People who have no interest in cars in the slightest and just view them as transportation and nothing else, still even notice, stop, and stare at this massive red thing going down the street that sounds like a semi truck lol.

We had to fab up out own connection to the clutch pedal from the master cause the OEM Toyota one just bent in half after the first 10 uses. Every week or so I check everything else going on up there aswell. I've never even looked into the specs for the 4bd1t just new it would be much better than a 3B. The biggest thing I'm a fan of right now, in its stock form I'm pretty sure Isuzu tuned it to never crack 1200f on the EGT's, I can pull up a hill pedal to the metal and it will hit 1200 and just stop right there while continuing to accelerate. With the 1HZ-t I gunned it up a hill and hit 1100 very quickly where I would have been at maybe 700-800 in my troopy. Just cool to see the comparisons.

Yea really it seems like anywhere in the powerband with this engine it just has more power to put down, its ready to GO. The stock turbo on the Isuzu is also laggy, and I'll also be putting on an HX30 someday in the future whenever I get bored and have the money to spare. Then I'll start messing with the fueling and all that other stuff and I bet I'll be able to crack the 1200 Isuzu-governed EGT range.

You forgot to factor in that since both of our troopy's are painted red we will be roughly 10-20% faster than any white or tan troopy out there.

That was cool you got to check those out. Power wise similar for sure, and in terms of being in the US these are pretty dang similar lol.

15bf-t 4.1L DI 152hp, 281tq

So yea a bit more power overall, should be a running beast in there.

I’m disappointed there wasn’t a drag race 😂

@theglobb look at the HE221 as well. Lots of people use those on 4bd1t, a couple different sizes from my size at 5.5cm or more like 6 or 7cm that would work great at lower altitude.
Capable of like 42psi….Brand new both the hx30 and he221 can be had mid $500s

Certainly noticed that when we went to O'Reilly's to get my alternator lol...

I've been 100% sold on the Troopy as the best 70 Series there is, the move now is to wait a few years until I have room and hopefully money, then find an early 00s GCC or European spec 78 overseas, take it on a roadtrip, and ship it back home.

Its getting colder here, my water temp was only reaching like 150f driving around town. Ordered a new thermostat and its chillin' at 175-180 now.

Also I don't have glowplugs hooked up, it starts up great even when its been 36 degrees out, just smoked a ton for the first minute or 2. Got a block heater off amazon and installed it. Holds it a 140f overnight it seems, no smoke on startup anymore.

Can't say enough good about having a manual glow plug switch. Momentary toggle switch low left of your steering wheel on the dash which activates a ford/generic cheap starter solonoid sending 12V or 24V to the glow plugs. You'll figure out how long and when you need to hold the toggle switch on before starting. For the 3b in temps above 70F don't need to use it at all. Colder just hold it 5-10 seconds if the vehicle has sat for more than 6 hours without running. 24V to 12V plugs will probably work just start at 2 or 3 seconds on before cranking. You can also "split the batteries" for a non constant load like this on 1X vehicle start per day it will probably be just fine. Some direct injection engines do not need glow plugs at all for normal temperature operations.
