So, busy day. swapped in the plugs, wires, dist cap n rotor, flushed the heck out of everything for 5 min on each core, rad, and block. blew them out with air, then filled with fresh coolant and distilled water. changed the secondary pcv hose (cracked), couple other small hoses, and buttoned everything up. Put my burp funnel on top.

Put my code reader on it, jump box, and fired it up. let it idle for an hour at various rpms. highest temp I could get with both heaters on was 183, that was with cardboard in front of the rad. shut the heaters off, and highest temp I saw was 187. I'll have to put the lights back in it and drive a bit and see if I got really lucky.

Also took the chance to paint my turn signal filler panel. of course there always has to be one stupid kamikaze bug, right smack in the middle...

Quick update. Put the nose on it, drove about 100 miles, only got up to 192...great! but it's still bubbling over the overflow. exhaust gas smell, so the head gasket will be upcoming.

While I had the nose apart, I tried cleaning up a dent in the driver's front fender. got it decent enough, then mounted my waterproof solar connector, with 8 gauge leads up to the battery in loom. I can now use my renogy solar suitcase in my truck or camper. made up some aluminum panels to cover my empty turn signal holes, and painted all the dark grey trim in the grille and around the lights and signals gunmetal metallic.

Started amassing the rest of the bits, vac hoses, and things. I pulled the heat shields off, and cleaned them up. ended up polishing them to match the valve cover. Ill be ordering a set of exhaust studs, and that should be about it for parts.

Also did get it inspected this week, and the tag sticker. Only been due since Oct

Yesterday was tie rod end swap day. Took about 6 hours, including time for paint to dry. took a bunch of heat, pb blaster, 18 inch pipe wrench, 18 inch crescent wrench. oh yeah, and my hi lift ja o handle. but they all got swapped, and a liberal amount of alum antisieze on the install. used the 555 tie rod kit from Cruiser Outfitters. steering stabilizer bracket kicked my butt. will grab a puller for that. new. Ome steering stabilizer on its way. gave it a close enough alignment, so i can take it to get aligned.

Was going to do front and rear ujoints, but i wanted to save the neighbors from foul language on a religious holiday.

No pics, but more importantly, no clunks, thunks, bangs or clangs anymore.

I know what you mean about those crusty rod ends. I took my truck for an alignment today and the shop couldn't turn the tie rod at all. They just gave up. I guess I will have to do it myself.:(

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!!

Picked it up yesterday afternoon from the shop, and had an uneventful drive home. No overheating, no coolant out of the overflow. put the heat shields and spark plug wire covers on and called it an evening.

This morning was a quick trip to Taylor's Tire for an alignment, and then down to Discount Tire for the new shoes to get installed.

The 33s look smaller on the truck than they did on the floor. Almost wish i had gone with 35s, but these will be just fine. was surpsied how quiet the mtz's are on the road.

Lift is stock height OME springs, tokico oem shocks. no 2nd or 3rd row seats.

Hopefully bringing home my sliders tomorrow to prep for paint.

Drove up to the Relic Run about lunchtime on Saturday. Couldnt stay very long, could only make a parts dropoff and pickup. Only issues (other than forgetting how 80 series love to drink gasoline), was the left side speakers went out. Rear passenger door speaker was grounding out against the metal...so that got resolved. Other item is an exhaust leak at the O2 sensor right before the cat. Need to see if there are any threads left on the studs to get the o2 sensor off and back on with a new gasket, weld in a new bung, or look at replacing the y pipe.

And I brought back two stupid heavy chunks of metal to bolt on after I prep and paint em. Thanks @Trollhole for bringing them over, and @fj40z for helping me load em up.

Not working on the truck, but did remove the cover from the camper, and deployed the ARB screen room under the ARB 2500 awning today. Need to find a marine upholstery shop to stitch in an additional zipper so the camper door can be accessed from inside the room.

Quick update. ive got an exhaust leak at thefrknt o2 sensor. gasket was blown out, causing the truck to run stupid rich. went to replace the gasket, and the nuts were rusted to almost nothing. the studs were marginally better. ive got a new sensor gasket in, and have to use a couple washers to get the nuts to find threads that will hold it. not a perfect seal, but will buy me a little time to plan out thr exhaust. I ordered the magnaflow 22000 series y pipe and single cat, and did confirm it was the magnaflow and not the bosal part.

Can i run single cat, and will i need an o2 sim for the rear? also, whos got a good exhaust shop in the triad? looking to do a new muffler(quiet), and keep the resonator.

Oh yeah, i hefted these mofos out, and slapped some paint on them. the main reason why i wanna get my exhaust fixed ;)

I did use it. it liked to go on very thick. I used 3 cans, and could probably use a 4th just on the topsides.

Ive used the stainless steel color on an old fridge many moons ago. i had thought about doing these in that, or the same gunmetal as my wheels. if i dont like it, im out 12 bucks in paint, right

I had the same issue with my front O2 sensor studs / nuts. I had to peel chunks of the remaining nuts off chunk by chunk, but some pieces were stuck in the threads. I ended up buying a Hex Die from Napa and the studs cleaned right up. Let me know if you want to borrow the Die.

I used a muffler shop in Lexington a few years back to replace my cats, muffler and re-route the exhaust over the frame. The pics are in my uploaded albums and in one of my old threads. The shop almost let me get by with one cat, but said it could cause a problem during my annual vehicle inspection, so we eventually decided to slap two in. I'll look for the name of the shop...

FOUND IT...Walt's Exhaust and AC in Lexington

Your pics came up with the. Red x of death. do you recall what cat and muffler you have? i want it relatively quiet.

I appreciate the die, but my threads are shot onnmy y pipe, along with the bung. ive got the magnaflow y and cat already.

Haha. Walts! Theres a decade old fj40z referral.

My thoughts were cheap price and ok quality but not great with the caveat of I gave him a challenge that he accepted of 3” over the frame.

He got it done just missed some weld at the tops of the pipes. My biggest complaint was the flowmaster 50 he put in instead of the 80 i requested. Went back for reaonator next day and still too loud.

He willingly allowed/suggested one cat for me. Catco universal brick 7” iirc. Id likely buy my muffler cat and resonator of choice and take to him. Or ask him to order specifics. Busy place so be prepared to wait and wander dtown lexi gton. Esp if a/c season.

Edit. Doh i see i posted that in the other thread

I used Merican Muffler in Greensboro, 716 Camann St. They had to re-manufacture the "Y" pipe because one leg was 3/4" to short and once completed it looked like it was made that way. They also custom bent a tail pipe which is no ease task on a 40 with a fuel tank in the rear. They are also car guys, there was a Mustang in the shop going through a rebuild. If I need more muffler work this will be the first stop.
