I decided to rework the firewall...didn't like my first attempt.

Here's the brake line straightener I was talking about. I'd be willing to loan it out to folks with the correct deposit.

I had a "private backer," I split the costs with my dad since he's running new lines for his 4 wheel disk brake swap on his '62 Impala SS

you mentioned doing a alternator, one wire gm stuff is off the old si10 series of alternators very low output at idle,

take a look at the cs144 series, the 140amp puts out 100 amps at idle and they are more reliable same bolt up..

Sweet build. I'm rebuilding my om617a now for a future 40 install. Frankly I'll just be happy when my engine is as clean as yours. I've been tripping over disassembled Diesel engine parts for two years now in the garage! (Solving this issue is my main driver for getting this project completed). Keep us posted with the necessary 40 retrofit mods.

Well it's been almost a 14 months, but today I have completely finished my 4 wheel brake swap. I'm too tired to post pics, but everything is done. I've got a few drips, but I checked all the connections and re-torq'd, wiped clean, and I'll take a look tomorrow. I have all my hose components for power steering, power steering cooler, and oil cooler and my rear driveshaft should be done in the next few days. I feel like I'm getting close to starting this thing!

RAYJON, thanks for the info on the alternators. That sounds like the way to go. I've got a lot of figuring out to do to get the alternator integrated with the electrical system. I'm also reading up about getting rid of the ammeter and transitioning to a voltmeter. I also need to think about how I want to enable the glowplug system. Being a pilot, I kinda like pushing multiple buttons at once (not to mention it makes it harder to steal!) So I'm thinking a manual glow guarded (off/covered) switch with a pushbutton start.

Is that the naturally aspirated engine? I'll keep posting stuff as I come across it. It's been pretty straightforward so far. Only homebrew stuff was my motormounts that I made...

No, mine is a turbo as well. The 'a' means turbo in Benz diesel motor designation lingo. I have a ways to go, mostly because of money tied up in other projects. Ultimately I'm going to increase the plunger size on the ip and install a larger turbo but right now I'm trying to sort out the best way to safely lower compression without spending any more money than I normally would at the machine shop. I'll remake the compression with the aforementioned mods at a later time. Then I just have to find a derelict 40 to put it in! Good luck, it's a fantastic engine and a cool project.

In other news, I picked up my rear driveshaft and I was a little disappointed with the overall "bulk" of it. It's a whole lot less "big" than the OEM, but it's 2" .120 wall DOM with 1310 U-joints. They said if I break it, they'll build me a new one. I guess that's good enough for me. I know the 1310s probably aren't as strong as the OEM Toyotas, which were practically new in my old shafts, but they should do. I'll try to get some pics up...

Started modifying the oil pan today. I'm getting to the point where this thing is consuming waaaay too much of my time...

It's a BTB Products 4 wheel disc booster/master combo.

I searched around and wanted to keep it all Toyota, but then realized it didn't matter, ya know considering the Mercedes engine and all...

Lots of work today and still not done...

Finished my fan shroud. I did a bunch of spot welds with the intent of looking like rivets on an aircraft. I know I know, I'm a crazy drunk pilot, but it's my chicken...

Mounted the power steering cooler, now I need to route the lines. I'm using Aeroquip socketless fittings and I can't say enough about them. Super simple.

I also got the oil filter housing pulled back off and used an OEM MBZ gasket, I didn't like the paper one.

Modified an inspection cover for the flywheel...

Fitted the new rear driveshaft. I'm still not sold on the strength if 1310 U-joints...

And, drum roll....I finished the oil pan. (Which mean next weekend fluids and hopefully some run time!!!) I know the welds look like boogers but I gobbled it on with .023 wire to make sure there were no leaks. Looks like crap, but it's my crap! Haha

The wifey wants to take the family to the pumpkin patch if I don't deploy, so that's the new goal...

I'm sitting here having a beer looking at this...

Garage is a wreck, I have wire wheel remnants sticking out of my legs, I'm dirty as hell, arc burned, yet satisfied...

that's coming along so nicely. and I think your fan shroud looks awesome. cool touch with your spot welds. I'm still sourcing a few parts for my engine rebuild but hopefully soon I'll have my full driveline sitting in my shop as I prep the frame! I'm glad I have your thread to follow

Finished up my power steering cooler last night. I think I'll have to go to some 150* fittings to minimize hose kinks and get it a little further away from the inner fender.

For reference.:
Aeroquip socketless hose ends:
-6 AN = FBL 1532 black anodized, 90 degree
-8 AN = FBL 1533 black anodized, 90 degree


Anybody see a reason why I shouldn't route the lines this way. This Aeroquip line is pretty abrasion resistant, but Im thinking of a way to raise it up to minimize any kind of metal on rubber contact...

In case you didn't catch it, or I didn't mention, it's a -6 AN input and -8 AN output from the cooler. Is that going to cause flow problems? Seems like the fluid will end up spending a little less time in the cooler versus if it was -6 and -6.

Today's goal is mounting the oil cooler and maybe cranking her up!

Well, I'm not going to be able to use the OEM oil cooler. I put a lot of work into it with respect to welding up my own adapters for -10AN fittings, etc; but, it's just not in the cards I do believe. So I'm going to go with a Mishimoto unit, it's got a lifetime warranty and I'm sure it will cool just fine. I'm not going to be Autobahning this thing.

In other news: the Mule lives!

I didn't get the first crank on video because I forgot to bleed the power steering and it foamed up like a mofo. I had the wife on duty with respect to keeping the res topped off and it just exploded, haha. Anyways, let it settle a bit, cranked the wheel from side to side and it's all fine. I'm running Lucas Products Power Steering fluid, it's clear and seems to work fine.
