I'm building a J30 gear situation, and don't have propeller shafts. I figured that I would copy a factory shaft for length, as spring and motor mount wear would add a couple variables.

I don't have access to an OEM J30 shaft, plus it's hard to know exactly where is neutral for the splines. My apologies if this info is in the FSM; honestly I haven't looked. Tom Woods has made me shafts for other trucks, and I've always been very happy. T-case drum face to pinion flange distance with the truck neutral and unloaded, and he'll make a perfect fit. The Lobster got its valves adjusted and timing set today, awaiting the arrival of my rebuilt carb from @65swb45. Then a trip around the island on a classic Maine foggy and overcast 4th.

More build, less glamour shots today.

I was very excited to come home to my MarkA @65swb45 rebuilt carb today. Nicely packed. He included the finishing nail that had been used to hang the float. I pulled the old carb. This soldier kept me on the road this summer, but was dumping so much fuel into the intake my last tank was 6 mpg.

Night and day difference. I have a slightly wandering idle, still a mystery there. Valves adjusted and timing set at the BB yesterday, plugs cleaned after the excess fuel I've had. Vacuum running a bit low so I'll try and hunt that down tomorrow. But, giant improvement. Thanks Mark.

Before coming home to my new carb, I had been playing with my 78 rear axle. Front is already torn down, diff is off to Zuk for a complete rebuild and an Auburn LSD I had around. I'm going to swap the rear diff into the front as it won't see a lot of miles in use.

I was hopeful things would like nice inside. Those hopes died today. Diff actually looks decent. My hope to "just swap the seals, leave the bearings" was wildly optimistic.

A lot of what's on the axle shafts at the bearing surface is elevated and appears to be rust and garbage from the bearings. No grooving that I can see, but I need to get them cleaned up to be sure. It looks like the axle lost most of the oil while sitting, rather than being run dry. There wasn't much left in the diff to drain, and what was there had a fair amount of water mixed in. Definitely a mess, but salvageable? What say you good people? As @wngrog says, diffs are third world tough. Axle shafts as well? What a pile, but it's here.

That shaft is a goner. Worn through the hard face.

Well, that's a shame. Looks like I'll be giving you a call. May just try to find another complete rear end.

You would just end up taking that apart as well. Clean out this housing and it should be fine with new bearings and seals...and axleshafts.

I have a compete rear axle or two here if you want any parts. Seems the fastnal option is not available to cheaply send the whole thing.

Holla if you want new shafts shipped

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I'm working on some options with @orangefj45 since I have the Pig coming across already.

Lobster was terrorizing my driveway and garage floor with oil drips. At first I thought it was a poorly sealed pan drain plug. I waited until I had the new carb so I could drain the oil that was fuel diluted from the fuel puking prior carb. New crush washer. Still making a mess. Despite @matzell going the extra mile with the JBWeld doing preemptive leak fixes, I either had a crack or rust between the pan and the skid plate.

Forum searching made it seem like this job was the 6th level of hell, but it really wasn't more than a  job.

Out with the old

Just realized I missed that circle sticker  Also, if anyone sees this in a search, the new pan has the smaller drain plug, like the 100 series, not the big plug like the original FJ60 pan.

No leaks so far. Biggest challenge was getting the cork gasket to stay in the end grooves long enough to get the pan up. I used just a touch of FIPG in the 4 corners plus a small dab in a few places between the bolt holes. Held it long enough to get it all fitted.

Took her out for a victory lap. @65swb45 rebuilt carb running great, though I still have just a touch of wandering at idle. Leaks should all be fixed as the rear main seal and the rest of the engine gaskets as well as the trans and T-case were done by @matzell. Drum brakes for now are working well. 3rd member is with Zuk for a rebuild and a LSD for the rear. Some combo of replacement parts will make it all work eventually. Happy :D

Out and about with my younger daughter today. Back to college soon, couldn't let that happen without some practice with the manual transmission. Headed to the empty high school parking lot. Pretty flat, hill challenges soon!

In axle news, @gearinstalls.com aka Zuk is on the case with the 3rd member rebuild.

Auburn LSD, so this one is going in the rear. The other diff I pulled out of the "deep sea" rusty axle was marginal. As was the rest. Working on a parts sharing scheme with @orangefj45 involving a certain 1970 Pig axle that I may have recently acquired.

Another gorgeous day. Took The Lobster to the actual lobster pier. Lobster boats pull up, unload the day's catch. They get shipped worldwide from here, as well as getting cooked and fed to folks on the other side.

Across the bay from the pier. This is the land of Hinckley yachts if you're looking to drop $500k and up (way up) on a boat.

Lobster made the move to New Hampshire. Took it out for a ride through the Vermont farm country.

Then I went to meet my neighbor, @Doctorhusband. Introduced the Lobster to his sweet 1969 Swine.

Front and rear axle/brake upgrade is on hold until replacement parts come from @orangefj45 later this month.

Pork and lobster, now that’s a meal!
