I run open top 24/7 and it does drift in when coming to a stop sign but goes away pretty quick. my exhaust exits alomst same as yours. the other thing that effects that is wether your comp tune uses a VSS to control fuel, mine relys on the crank & O2 so it takes a second after coming to stop sign to adjust, if yours has a VSS it should be adjusting faster and you should get little exhaust smell, if its real bad check the fuel maps & ratio readings to see if they are tracking and in range, may be too much fuel on low end ? Is your muffler straight thru ? I used a magnaflow universal that can go in either way & is striaght thru, that may be effecting your heat as well.

My entire exhaust system is straight through but I am having a muffler shop install a dyomax turbo muffler with a resonator today to hopefully quiet down the exhaust.

My tune is not running rich. I’m running a cat to reduce emissions.

Mike, are your inner fender wells intact? If they are maybe adding louvers to the inner fender wells will help with air flow.

My inner fender wells are cut out but I am planning to rebuild them with louvers to allow air to flow through and out near the headers. Without them though, I don’t believe my floor is as hot as you are seeing but I have never taken a tempura reading.

I do have inner fenders but the temperature under the hood isn’t terrible. My engine runs between 199-205 and the intake temp is around 115-130. Those dual Spal brushless fans move some serious air through the engine compartment. I should take an exhaust temp reading from my o2 sensors. I had to wrap the right side down pipe last year as the starter was getting heat soak. The wrap fixed that problem but I didn’t continue wrapping the pipe where it crosses over the frame under my feet.

Did you notice the floor getting hotter after you wrapped the down pipe?
Just wondering if you just moved where the heat migrated away.

I’ve only wrapped the right side down pipe so far and it exits down under the engine so I imagine that it stays fairly cool. I honestly didn’t notice the heat problem until I had the soft top made.

It was partly cloudy in Denver today and 70°F. I had the A/C on low and I had to turn it off as I got too cold. The shield over the cat is definitely doing its job. We have a couple of hot days ahead, and into the 90s later this week and I am excited to drive it to work. I imagine that it will still be hot inside the Cruiser.

I got it back from the muffler shop and the Dynomax turbo muffler with resonator reduced the DB from 95 to 70, which is quite impressive. I am very happy with that. I will post some pictures though I will need to trim the tail pipe a bit.

I am putting this here for future reference. They installed a Dynomax ep1911 muffler and an Aero AR25 resonator. This is your setup If you want your LS to sound like a factory truck. The muffler is marketed as an economy muffler and it was inexpensive. I’ll have to see how well it holds up. The Borla XR1 lasted about 1k miles before the packing blew out.

What are you laughing at, Rob @matzell?

The packing blowing out after 1000 miles. Borla being such a high end name and all.

I too use Dynomax Turbo mufflers, have for years. Good sound and price is right. They build most of them in Harrisonburg VA, not too far from me. Walker is the parent company.

It’s okay to admit if you were laughing at my journey. I might need to move this to the softcore section if I keep it up. I am really disappointed with Borla. I really thought that the muffler would be durable. It sounded really cool but I don’t need a nascar cruiser.

I did notice that the Dynomax was made in the USA, but I did not know that their parent company is Walker. I have a Walker muffler on our 4Runner and it is quieter than stock, which wasn’t really a requirement but it’s okay with us. I just don’t need all of the noise anymore.

Can’t wait to see you in August!

I bought a walker quiet flow(?) when I finally finished my SBC. When I swapped the LS in, it was still in good shape. I’m still using it.They’re pretty cheap and seem to hold up well.

It’s not terribly loud- I’d say being topless is louder for sure. My buddies 5.0 early bronco has a nice sound with a louder exhaust, but he only drives it off road. Riding in loud exhaust cars in general is fun for about 5 min, then I’m dreaming of my minivan.

You are giving me so many ideas for AI-generated images but I will refrain myself. I guess I am not alone.

I drove the Cruiser on the freeway for an hour yesterday and it is so much better to drive. I will still need my ear plugs at speeds over 60 mph as the wind noise reached 95 db at 75 mph, though the decibels are about 75-88 at speeds up to 60, which is easily a 10-12% noise reduction.

It’s still hot! I can’t wait to get the interior installed as I imagine that will help reduce the heat that radiates from the floor. My transmission cover reached 160°F where I do not have additional heat shields yet, but the area above the cat only reached 118, so that is a vast improvement. I am tempted to pull the carpet back in our 2015 Corolla and take a reading after driving to work today.

All is good and I will move on to installing the hush mat inside of the Cruiser this weekend. I am waiting to hear back from the dyno tune folks to see when I can get in to have a few kinks ironed out, and for them to shut off the accelerator disable function. It’s too dangerous to throw a code while traveling in rush hour traffic and the computer disables the accelerator function. It usually happens right at the time when traffic goes from 5-100 mph. I suppose a cable-driven accelerator would have fixed that but I am not changing that.

It has been fun to work on the Cruiser again!

Aluminium is a much better conductor of heat than steel @peesalot. I don't know whether you've got an Aqualu as well, but that could explain a lot of the difference.

The tub is from Aqualu. I would agree with you though my steel is now reaching the higher temperatures. My transmission tunnel is made from 1/8” steel plate. Once the heat soaks in the floor is a furnace.

I should note that my factory firewall only reached 95 degrees yesterday, which is nearly 40 degrees cooler than before I installed the DEI firewall shield. I’ll keep layering it on.

I have noticed that my aluminum warms up quicker than the steel. The aluminum will reach 110-115 degrees in about 20-30 minutes while the steel is still sitting around 80 degrees.

For reference/ my 40 with zero stuck on sound deadening, loud muffler, loud tires and hard top is 85db at 65mph with my phone stuck up on top of the dash.

I’m sure the app is really accurate (sarcasm) however it’s a reference point.

Edit- also I have not noticed my floor being hot. Also have never temp gun checked it. Original steel tub, LS, cat under the driver floor. However I do have a rubber mat cut to fit the door wells with Amazon sound deadner stuck to the mat. So it’s upside down and just laying on the tub.

It sounds like I need to get my act together and finish lengthening my hard top! I’m impressed that I’ve been able to lower the noise to levels that are close to your Cruiser with the hard top. I will keep plugging away and see what I can do.

I feel like mine is loud.
