Im building a stereo system and i havent selected my head unit yet. If you have a head unit in your 80 that is larger than the double din size, like the alpine 11” or kenwood, ect, please post pictures. Im trying to decide if those oversized displays would be a mess or not in the dash.. if you have one or know some one who does please direct them to post a few pictures.

Thanks dudes ;)

Examples, incase you havent seen these before..

I was eyeing a Pioneer NEX unit for a while and decided I'm going without audio for a while and spent $$ elsewhere. The thing I liked about it, is the head unit is detached from the screen and mount in the dash or console if you choose to. Not 100% sure if they still have these units. The screen can be adjusted on the mount as well.

Dudes, thanks for the videos. Thats enough of a visual for me to decide against the large screen, I think theyre just too clunky. I appreciate the input.

Also, i hate that volume knobs have been replaced by buttons..

Volume knobs rule! That said, i bought a Sony 8100 without a volume knob, but then i bought an rca knob that ill run in between the head unit and my dsp to adjust preout voltage.. im building a huge stereo system, so im knee deep into this stuff.

Do you have any pics of your system's progress? My Pioneer unit just died and I'm looking at my options. My satellite tree is too handy to remove but it blocks the stereo location so I'm looking at something like the Alpine Halo11 iLX-F511 but I want to decouple the display from the head unit and mount it on my tree above my stand alone Android tablet. Looks like it's a proprietary connector that might take some bench work to fabricate. The Halo11 has a Bluetooth remote Volume/Bass knob too.

Alternatively, I'm looking at a DAC solution to interface my Amp with my tablets but my son's Android Auto head unit is pretty nice. Still working up options.

Looks like the Pioneer NEX line is still going strong. I'm leaning towards this unit because Kenwood and Alpine don't have any extension cord offerings to relocate the display further away from the head unit. The cable, however, is about $100 and is hard to find. There's quite a few listings on eBay for cables from Europe and apparently it works with all current releases (Pioneer DMH-WT7600NEX and DMH-WT8600NEX).

Bump. I'm looking to replace my double din touch screen and found this thread. Wondering if anyone else has examples (pics) of double din units with a larger (floating) touch screen? Sounds like Pioneer still has some good options but any other brands that are worth looking at?
