Help me make up my mind please: How many folks are going to bring a 2nd spare tire.

’86 60 with one spare under the tail gate. 255-85-16. For SAS I have always brought a 2nd spare (tire only, no wheel) & carried it on my roof rack. I like the idea of a 2nd spare…but I’m doing my best to cut weight…where practical.

I‘ve ruined a tire on a trail in the past but NEVER at this event. Never even had a flat here. But if you do ruin a tire & then have no xtra spare…you almost feel naked. I want to have it…but at the same time I don’t want the weight. I’m leaving my Hi Lift at home & some other stuff I normally carry.

What Say ye??

That looks like Poughkeepsie :)
Bring it. Without the rim, it doesn't really amount to a ton of weight but it represents way more than an ounce of prevention.
Plus, you jinxed it with the "never even a flat" talk...

I have 6 tire stores in Denver and could hot shot down in an emergency. I never carry two.

I take an extra spare for the pickup (and trailer) when I'm towing anything or very far from home. For this event we're never alone, and there is always another 31-33" spare around close. I too have not a flat yet in 5 years at this event....

But...no good deed (or thought) goes unpunished, so I'll probably grab a 2nd spare from another rig and bring it now 🤣. I was always scraping off wheel weights and "tripping" my spare up under the bumper, so I put it on a swing out. I still have the spare bracket and winder so it's easy to tuck one in there for the trip and leave it in camp.

Space for the 2nd spare is one concern, me & wife tent camping (this time for 12 days) so it is crowded but i can make the room for sure. it is the weight that is the real concern…this spare weighs 60 lbs w/o rim

someone should always have a spare they can loan long enough to get back to camp… that is the most important thing. I think the odds are low you will need 2 (or should be able to find one within 24-48hrs max).

Yeah that’s a ton of light. I don’t know if it’s my eyes or the way my brain processes the really bright white LEDs - which are really the only lights with that kind of output - but I see worse with those than lower output halogen. It’s like my brain can’t process the information as well. The Koito headlights with Osram bulbs I have are in the neighborhood of 1200-1500 lumens each, so adding 4000 more lumens of a warmer color temp LEDs will more than double what I have and that’s plenty for me. Some of the newer LEDs with cooling fans and such can be well above 10000 lumens each. Insane.
As I understand it... Warmer colors mute detail, which allows your brain to deal with the shadows more readily. I'm vaguely remembering a video I watched a while ago.

Leave it! You’ve got plenty of backup

I should bring extra lug nuts if somebody needs my spare.

I should also bring extra nuts if I need to use somebody else's.

spares? what are those?

Thanks for everyone’s input. Bringing only 1 spare tire. Weight savings win!😁

That's less than a 1% weight savings for me. I'll bring an extra one just for you John 😁.

@Kleatus I’m fully with you on this weight thing.👍🎯👍. In the past I’ve never given weight all that much attention…that’s why when I’m fully kitted out for a camping trip, full of fuel & one passenger I weigh in @ 6,700 lbs.

Thats pretty heavy & you’re right, 60 lbs isn’t that much, one way or another. But I gotta start somewhere. This year I’ve eliminated the tire, Hi Lift Jack, last year I carried a spare long axle & some other stuff in the interior have also been eliminated this year.

The Hi Lift, 2nd spare & the long axle, just to name 3 items…I’ve carried for years…and NEVER have had a need for any of them.

So anyway, I’ve decided to quit talking about weight and instead…try to do something.😊

Hey, everyone you can carry as many spare parts, pieces and tires and whatever you want still doesn’t make it reliable

100%

But, if you've spent thousands of dollars.
Large amounts of time preparing and traveling.

Why not enjoy some security knowing a few things aren't going to knock you out and send you home day one?
