@Kleatus I’m fully with you on this weight thing.👍🎯👍. In the past I’ve never given weight all that much attention…that’s why when I’m fully kitted out for a camping trip, full of fuel & one passenger I weigh in @ 6,700 lbs.

Thats pretty heavy & you’re right, 60 lbs isn’t that much, one way or another. But I gotta start somewhere. This year I’ve eliminated the tire, Hi Lift Jack, last year I carried a spare long axle & some other stuff in the interior have also been eliminated this year.

The Hi Lift, 2nd spare & the long axle, just to name 3 items…I’ve carried for years…and NEVER have had a need for any of them.

So anyway, I’ve decided to quit talking about weight and instead…try to do something.😊
I’m new to the off-roading world and have lots of stupid questions and even more bad ideas.

Would a trailer make sense? I saw a smallish two wheel military grade trailer on here somewhere. I thought that if I could offload stuff that wasn’t absolutely needed on the trail - it’d be worthwhile. It appeared to me last year that there were plenty of folks who could get me back to camp if my truck couldn’t make it. Do I really need to carry the spare diff up into the hills?

That being said, I can’t imagine towing behind one of these Cruisers….

Started the packing process this morning. I’m bringing one spare and a plug/patch kit.

I'm in the camp that extra weight does matter, it puts extra stress on every single component on the rig.
When we head off into the mountains were in large groups, we never leave anyone alone on the trail and there always someone that well go back to camp for the part you need.
That being said I do carry a spare and a patch/plug kit and the necessities. but big stuff like spare drive shafts, axles and so on stay at camp or at the trail head in my trailer.

I’ve got some OEM radius arms, inner/outer axles, front DBA rotors as well as other parts off of a 97 80 series. if anyone is interested in them let me know and we can work soemthing out where I bring them. Was going to leave them back home due to not having much room.

Might be interested in the front axle short side !
If I remember correctly your rig is triple locked, thirds are not interchangeable with open diff
Unless you’re looking for some other application.

Trailer, you ask?! Mine arrived Wednesday and I’m beaming. Look forward to showing you in Amarillo what @POTATO LAUNCHER can do for you!! Pics forthcoming…

Continuing with my ridiculous, unnecessary lighting project…. Lights mounted and half of the scratch built harness is made. About to knock out the rest this morning and get these bad boys fired up.

This really is pretty absurd looking:

It appears to me that you have room for 4 more…

Plus another 8 on the roof rack.

And actually the lower portion of the bumper is schedule for some surgery so it can accommodate my winch, so no lights down there unfortunately.

Is there a trail closure list anywhere? Just heard from a buddy in the area with the following:

“Stony Pass is now open!!

Primitive camping spot at base of Poughkeepsie gulch (Poughkeepsie is closed but Mineral Creek to base is open) would be a great alternative if Ouray amphitheater doesn’t work out. Mineral creek right there, plenty of firewood, not over run by tourists.”

speaking of classic basket roof racks, if anyone is interested I am selling this classic Garvin rack that was for a 60 that I recently modified to fit a 40. If I get my asking price I can bring this with me for free if anyone is interested

Check bushducks.com for trail status stuff. There’s a good San Juan’s group on FB as well as Ouray County bridge & road that both post updates too.

Colin McRae’s daily

You guys better hurry up, I've already crossed the country (2100 miles and counting) and fixed my 60. I'll leave Yuma in the morning after I pick up my camper and roll up another 800-1000 miles before Ouray. Everybody bring your spares, what's a little extra weight? I might need them 😀
