So, I have a canadian fj45 rear axle and I want to install the TrailGear studless hub.

The problem concern the inner seal that prevent the diff oil to mix with the grease inside the hub.

There seems to be 2 types of seals:
1) canadian version: The seal is made to go on the end of the outer 54mm bolt that screws at the end of the spindle. So, that bolt with seal extends the spindle about 3/8".
2) us / australian version ?? : pretty different seal that goes inside the tip of the spindle. Thats the ont I'm interrested in.

My problem is: if I do install the TG studless hub, the locking puck sits about 1/8" (or even closer) to the end of the spindle. So, I have not enough space to put that canadian nut with seal that I have.

My question is: will those us/australian seals fit inside my spindles? The inside of my spindles are 35.12mm
Is there à shoulder to prevent the seal to slide inside the spindle?

I will try to post pics later I'm on the ipad

The seal style change is based on the production date

9/75-1/79 is the old, 1/79-97 (and newer non-NA models). There is a larger later seal too: Cruiser Outfitters

And without machining, newer spindle end seal won't fit into your axle.

Are you sure the cap and nut won't fit? The axle shaft has to stick out farther than the spindle far enough to fit the drive slug on the splines. I have a similar set up.
Post some pictures of your setup and issues.

EDIT: It sounds like we have the same problem with different stuff.

The TG studless hubs are designed to fit on front spindles, and the rear spindles are actually a little shorter (I believe) Which is why if you read below, I had to cut my front spindles down.

I had to do a bunch of mods to get things to fit. I built my own FF rear axle using a 1978 c-clip axle, welded ruff stuff ends, and a FF FJ80 long shaft and a factory 40 series FF rear shaft. I actually had to cut down the front spindles (to fit on the rear) 1/8" with a zip disk to get the axles to fit into the front hubs and have the flanges on the shafts sit flush with the hub.

I am not running seals at all....

I am not able to run the rubber seal nut thingy, although I would love to try them and maybe turn them down?!?

Where can we buy the "inside the end of the spindle" seals? I really want a pair. Part Number?

Cheers!

I'm confused, if the rears are shorter, why did you have to cut them down.

Ok, precious informations here. Thanks Cruiseroutfit and dr_claw. I have read your entier thread last week. It's pretty close to what I do except for the seal. Do you have some leakage from the big seal at the rear of the hub?

Cruiseroutfit. What I understand is I will have to buy the 36mm seal and machine the inside of the spindle to make a seat font that seal. Am I right?

I will come back with measurments and pics

35 or 36 depending on your axles.

OK... Without pics my axle issues are probably clear as mud. I will try.

The factory rear FF spindles are shorter (I believe) than the front spindles.

I put front spindles on the back with adapters and factory-ish rear axle shafts. These shafts have a collar on them that hit the front spindles when put on the rear.

This is probably your issue with the TG hub's?

I cut my spindles down with a zip disk and cleaned up with a flap disk to accomadate the shafts. This left no space for the big FF spindles nut with built in rubber seal.

The inner seal in the end of a front spindle looks money and I will order some ASAP.

More clear? Cheers!

Just measured the spindles. You are right. Fronts are about 4mm longer. About 2mm in the treads and I Will have to look closer to Find where the other 2mm is lost .

Also measured inside dia. of 3 different spindles They are 35.25 (FF REAR) to 35.50mm (fronts).

And I Will have to read a bit about posting pics with an ipad...

Which axles use a front inner seal at the spindle?

Do me favor and measure the seal surface on your existing 75-79 FF axles. I think it's larger than the 35mm/36mm region and thus the RA35001/RA36003 might not work even if you can get them into the end of the spindle.

The 75-79 seal on the left, the 79-97 seal on the right:

Hard to tell from this shot but the earlier deal has a considerably larger OD than the later.

As far as I know there was never an 'inner' spindle seal available for front spindles.

I am hoping to use a rear FF spindle seals on front spindles. I will measure a spare spindle tomorrow.

FYI I also have a factory fj45 FF axle in another rig but I don't want to take it apart
