FrankinCruiser. I don't like the rear door one bit. Heated leather seats? For that kind of coin I'd want oil analysis and compression #'s D/W

Definitely South American, questionable restoration, I wouldn't spend $21k of my money on it.

I saw your thread about the '74 in Columbus also. If you're shopping in the $15-20K, that's enough to get a nice 40 that may need some minor things, but isn't hiding a bunch of crazy. You just have to be patient and ready to move when a good one pops up. Not sure if you're in Columbus too, but if you are and want to look one over in person before buying, feel free to DM me.

@agingfleet knows what he is talking about- His 40 is a perfect example of a beautiful rolling restoration.

Have you looked in the classified section?
You need to be willing to travel or find someone in the area where the vehicle is that is knowledgeable to look at a 40 for you. There is a clubhouse section that spans the country. Typically you want a solid body and decent mechanicals. Bodywork can become a deep rabbit hole. I believe the 74 could be a deep hole.
Mechanicals are usually easier to quantify and identify. South American 40's usually have been rode hard and questionably repaired. Lipstick on a pig comes to mind. Don't get a caught up on the bling. If it has been restored try and get the b4 pics or buy one from a reputable seller on this site. You're budget should land you a nice driver with a decent body, it may need some body or mechanical work though.

I'm good with that. I want to be able to do the work myself as I drive it. I like the term "rolling restoration."

I'm driving mine as I complete projects. What part of Ohio? I'm in the south west near Cincinnati.

These trucks are really easy to tear down, can be a challenge to get back together the right way. Buying a solid 40 to start is $$ ahead and can be improved over time without taking it off the road for a year or 10.

I drive a Colombian FJ43 and it kicks ass. You could find the same crap right here in a NA FJ40, the home of lipstick on a pig!
Know that where ever your 40 series comes from to look it over completely.

Anyways, that 40 is most likely Colombian because of the MPR hardtop which originated in the Colombian market. The absence of a heater is also a give away to its general market origin.

New lesson, avoid central/south American cruiser like the clap.
But what if you didn’t know…..

I know, poor inspection!

Much of it will either come off, or get painted over. The results can't be all that without full rebuild, once you see what is really going on under all that wet paint, but, a fun project car still.

SA front door bug-catcher type driver's window needs weather strip (?). 3.9L not 4.2L (F not 2F?). Does it have a speedo cable? How about some tube and nozzle to go with the windshield washer reservoir? A tow hook on the passenger front side of the frame rail?

I'd be inclined to do the '74 that you also posted.
