Hello GX peeps!

The is interested in going from our LX470 to a 460.

She likes the facelift front end - 2014 and later?

I didn't see a definitive guide to the 460 or FAQ in the stickies.

I wondering if we are thinking about 2014 (facelift) and newer, are there certain favorite years to consider? I have to imagine there were changes since '14.

What kind of mileage do y'all knock down?

Can you pull a camper? We have a TrailManor that is ~4k lbs wet, are we pulling that or shipping it?

I do see a thread about aftermarket support, so I will go through there for options on sliders and bumpers.

I've towed a 4000 lb boat without much trouble. A camper would have more aerodynamic drag, but it would get the job done. It's rated for 6,500 pounds, but it's just adequate, it's not a big V8.

If you want modern infotainment look for a 22-23.

I have a 470, rather than a 460, but can confirm that the GX platform will pull a TrailManor just awesome. The camper compliments a GX very well. I get 11-12 mpg pulling it 70-75, 12-13 mpg going 60-65 mph, and up to 14 mpg on 55-mph 2-lane backroads. We've logged multiple 700-mile days with this setup. I would recommend upgrading the trans cooler and either using a WDH or retaining the stock airbags. Later this summer we are planning to pull ours all the way to Glacier.

It also handles a ~5,000# loaded enclosed trailer quite well. We moved our family of 4 in ours (across town, but still).

Most people average 16-19 MPG depending on city/highway ratio.

Plenty of options for sliders and bumpers. Maybe not 200 or Jeep levels of support, but a bunch out there now for the 460.

Also things like key maintenance items/things to look out for when evaluating the For Sale ones we look at...

Look for rust, the coolant valley leak on early (pre-2014) models, and that's about it. Basic maintenance records are a big help and confidence inspiring piece of the GX puzzle. Other than that, pretty solid rigs, just get a PPI like you would with any other used vehicle.

Coolant valley plate can happen on newer trucks. I just diagnosed it on my 2015. Looks for pink stains on bell housing. Radiator will also probably need to be done around 120k as well. Make sure fluids have been changed, especially coolant.

When you say infotainment - do you mean CarPlay?
I really hope that is available before '22, I am not looking to go that new, and I put a Pioneer head unit in the LX so I am used to having it.

It looks like all 460s have a 6 speed.
2014 has a facelift which inlcudes LED headlights
2017 got 2nd row captain chairs
2022 got CarPlay or AA

Yep, happened to my '15, had it resealed at around 120k miles. At this point, I would consider it a service item for all GX460s, it's going to happen eventually.
My radiator lasted to 105k and waterpump failed at 85k

You can add CarPlay to an earlier GX using a kit. You really just need a 10mm socket, a slim trim puller and some patience.

Yeah I added CarPlay to my 2018 using a Beat-Sonic kit, it's not cheap but works well. There are a few other options too.

To my knowledge the coolant valley gasket material was swapped out sometime mid-2015 so some 2015's have the older gasket material. Unless its beat on and whatnot 2016's and newer shouldn't have the issue.

If my 470 was totaled tomorrow I'd start the search for a 22-23 while figuring out how to pay for it. Best tech of their longest-running SUV in the American market. And probably a decade before you might have to worry about the valley plate leak.

Mine is definitely intense usage. The amount of time i have spent on dirt in 2024 alone was enough to shrug off most of the repairs as cost of playing.

Ditto, if my 460 was totaled tomorrow I'd hunt for a 2022-2023 in Nori Green and plan to keep it literally until I die.

Regarding MPG, I don't tow but I've managed has high as ~18 MPG after adjusting for tire size. But note what my rig looks like with 35" tires here: R²M 2013 GX 460 Overland Build
Regarding tire size, I have to calculate my GPS speed against the speedo. The percent difference is then added to the MPG reading from the center binnacle display. I'm about 10% speed difference, so whatever MPG is being read on my display, I'll add 10%.
I also always run high octane, as recommended by Lexus. But this is a whole other debate on this forum.

Is there a large O-Ring on a pipe under there too which can fail, or am I remembering wrong? Regardless, that's great news about the gasket material being improved.

We have a 19 GX that currently has 50k miles on it. Had it for about 4 years and so far has been great. We have a Casita trailer that we've pulled a few times with. It's about 3500 pounds. You should be fine with your trailmanor. I'd add a trans cooler if you get one and tow with it. I added a mild lift from Dobinsons and GX 470 17 in wheels so I could ride on 70 series Wildpeaks.
