You have your work cut out for you, but you'll surely tackle it with the same skill you've applied to every other part of this truck. Nice build!

Hey thanks for the compliment. The whole point in owning a 30 year old vehicle, is all the fun stuff you get to learn how to do:).

Here are the products I purchased from Eastwood to use on my rust repair.

After removing all the loose rust, and wiped down with acetone, I used a foam brush to paint on the Rust Incapsulator.

I also painted the backside of my replacement pieces with weld through primer.

I purchased a set of stitch welding magnets to hold my pieces and started to weld them in.

I am using my 110v mig welder for this project. It seems to be a little easier to control the heat, than my big 220v miller.

Nice job so far on that rust repair.

Definitely not a job you can rush. When I did sheet metal repair in my 40 I forgot to seal the backside of the metal as you've done. So now I get to do it all over as it's already rusted through.

Keep it coming!

Continuing to move forward. I was concerned about burning holes in or lighting my headliner on fire, so I pulled it out of the way and stuffed a welding blanket in the crack

Now I really understand why, if you can find somebody to even do rust repair, that they charge so much. This has been very labor intensive. It will be even that much more satisfying when I am done:).

And the beat goes on!!! Trying to protect my glass and interior. Next step will be to pull the windshield and see what fun stuff I will have to fix next.

Damn courageous brother! I have to yet start repairing rust. I'm thinking the best approach is to just buy a rust free shell. I am still debating that.

If there had been rust all the way around, I would have gone for a replacement roof. There is only rust on the one side and by the time I am done, I will have a pretty good understanding of welding sheet metal. One thing I have gained is a whole lot more confidence to weld just about anything.

Yep, I can totally understand that. I guess it's easier to cut, shape and weld metal than dismantling the whole truck and rebuilding it again.

Nice little tools there. Have a feeling I am going to be grabbing the same stuff for some door repairs. How do you like the Stitch Magnets?

Friggen awesome use of the old suede jackets! Love it. I used a leather belt my ex's mom bought him that was too small a while back as a strap in some chore. It gave me great pleasure to make a mess out of it. ;)

The magnets work great. They were $18.00 from Eastwood.com.,you get 8 of them. Just keep them away from each other because when they slam together, they have a tendency to chip, and pinch your hands.

Sounds like you bought the right kind of magnets. Great job so far. You'll never look at body metal welding the same way again, when you're done.

Hell yah: I"m not afeared of any welding now:hillbilly:. The cool thing about welding , if you don't like the results, just grind it down and do it again,:D.

I recently purchased a 88 FJ62 and have been on this site for like a week learning and stalking all the threads, haha. I'm extremely impressed with your thread. I love your passion to keep the classic Toyota alive and on the roads. My goal is to have my FJ62 trailer my 67 Stout to JJCS or TORC next summer. Thank you for sharing!!!
