Hey y’all I’m Jostin and I’m new to the forum and cruisers I work at a shop and do all my own work I’m 21 so money is about as tight as you could imagine. need some help and advice on this rust

Picked this machine up for 3000 running and driving The rear quarter panels have a lot of rust and it’s spread the panel apart and there’s holes going into my wheel well the bolts holding on the panel have rusted out. Any ideas if this rust is way too much to handle in 1 summer? I’m planning on tearing it apart this summer just want an idea on how to repair this rust and if anyone else has had a fj with rust this bad. It runs and drives great 291,000 miles on the odometer I really want to let this machine keep living

You're dealing not only with rust, but with someone else's botched attempt at covering up the rust. Overall though, looks not terrible. Many people on this forum have started with much worse-looking 60s. Expect to find more rust than is visible at first glance. Based on the few pics you've posted, you're probably going to be repairing rear wheel tubs and possibly the floors around the rear seat, rockers, inner quarters, and maybe more. It can all be done, though. Replacement panels for some spots are available, but not everything can be purchased. You can also sometimes get a clean panel that someone has cut from a wrecked 60: if you can find a clean quarter from the rear door back, that'll save you a ton of work. Same with doors.

From the pics, undercarriage and frame look pretty decent.

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you! Gives me a great idea on what to start looking for I’m glad it isn’t too bad I was a bit worried but for $3000 I can’t complain . Hopefully I’ll be able to start march. I’m going to rebuild the 2F and go through the rust rabbit hole. I’ll be updating my build on the forum
