For @LandCruiserPhil and so as not to muck up a different turbo thread with something not related...Bolt on turbo kit

Some pics I have stashed away of the Safari turbo system...maybe we can use this thread to share others as needed.

One last one, @atxmike: funny atxmike and I both have that red hose, wonder if that came with the kit? Must have.

I'm not in the know but what was the other thread about, mainly how the various turbo systems look like? Just curious, that's all!

In the Bolt on Turbo Kit thread, Phil asked me for pics of my system. Thought starting a new thread would be a better idea rather than stepping in on Ryan's thread.

Good idea starting a new turbo thread for the currently installed. When was yours turbo indtalled and can we assume it was new at that time? Mine was installed new in 1997. Could explain the differences it the hoses and routing.

Mine was installed new in May of 2002. I have the install instructions, diagrams and parts lists (thanks @clownmidget !), which indicate to me that all the kits were the same when sent over here so my bet is that your hoses have been replaced due to age over time. Also your dual battery install might have interfered with the original hose routing, though reffug seems to have found a routing solution that worked with the original hose.

Thanks for posting. I've often wondered how they stuffed the turbo down low between the oil cooler and the tuna can. Looks like it's maybe a little farther back. I'm not sure my borg warner would fit in that spot. Do you know what turbo came with the safari kit?

Again from clownmidget in an old thread, since I would get this all wrong if I tried to repeat it: "It is just a Garrett T04E compressor housing with a CHRA T3/T4 56 trim cartridge, .82 A/R turbine housing." I believe it is a ball bearing turbo, and is water and oil cooled, so I believe pretty decent overall for the time period, but as Ryan keeps stating in various threads, turbo technology has greatly improved since these were designed.

My dual battery was also installed in 1997 and my rig had the same rubber octopus hose prior to a 1.5 years ago. The aluminum ghetto replacement pipe (as of 1.5 years ago) will be the first to go once the rig comes out of storage.

I could be wrong, but I believe it is a propriety turbine housing. I remember people having trouble replacing it when cracked. If it ever gets to that point though you should be able to replace with a standard housing and just modify the downpipe. The CHRA should be rebuildable. I would be surprised if it was ball bearing and water cooled, I don't see a line tapped in off the thermostat but I could be wrong....

I have both water and oil to my turbo...what it does exactly Im not sure yet. :grinpimp: It was just replaced last year and IIRC it was a GT34R or something like that, I do remember you saying it was a good one on your thread.:D

Oh than yes it is definitely Ball Bearing and water cooled. Where did they tap into the water/coolant?

I dont know but I can and will look once I bring it out of storage. I was hoping this week but its not looking good but this thread gives me more motivation:grinpimp:

They have a crazy looking fitting near the thermostat.

From the turbo it goes across the front of the engine to the radiator supply hard pipe:

This looks like pictures from the original mockup.

I had heard something to that effect about the housing too. And the outlet pipe is a custom cast piece as well, which has caused problems for some.

Am in talks about bringing these kits updated for the new millennium ATM using original parts and Safari coolers.

If done, it would be nice to have available some replacement soft parts for some of the existing systems. PCV preformed hose, charge hose, intercooler mount bushings, etc. Heck, even a replacement of the cast exit pipe would be nice to have on the shelf.

That is a good spot for your AFR, it is too far downstream for an EGT, you usually pick those up before the turbo and you really don't need an EGT. That is really more a diesel thing. As long as your AFRs are good it is unlikely you will have crazy EGTs

@scottryana I found this bung just below the Safari turbo set up. Would this be a good location for a EGT or a AFR sensor?

Hmm fitting instructions! Errr, any chance that i could get a copy of them? Just picked up a Safari kit with no instructions that would be handy. ;-)
