Hello friends! Started down the road of replacing the rear drums and pads. After tearing into it, i saw the rear backing plate is pretty rusted (surface) and wondering if it’s worth tearing into the axle and replacing the seals and bearings. Also if I should remove that piece and clean it up / paint it.

The axle is off the car as I’m in the midst of doing a frame swap so now’s the time to do it if I’m going to.

Thanks for any insight!

That backing plate doesn’t need replacing. Not from what I see. Take it off, wire wheel it and paint it.

Starting putting one side of the rear axle back together and once the new bearing was in, I noticed that somehow the back ring got bent in one area. Is this cause for concern / should I remove it again and get a new one? All the roller bearings still move.

Can you even out those dents?

For myself I would be replacing that bearing, even though they're not cheap. I've had 2-4 rear wheel bearing failures over the years because I drive a lot and if I ran that bearing I'd be concerned that it would unexpectedly fail. But if only doing local drives and if you don't plan on racking up a lot of miles I'd run it and keep a close watch on oil seepage at that wheel. Of the rear bearing failures I've had none have been noisy, symptoms have been poor braking due to fouled brake shoes, oil leakage, or with the last smoke from the wheel while running down the highway.

I have not tried to bend them back yet.

Since I'm right there, I'm leaning towards ordering another one and replacing it. A bit bummed it happened but that's part of the learning process. I do plan for the 60 to be a bit of an adventure rig (no rock crawling but camping, back roads, road trips, etc.).
