I've been thinking about adding rear A/C for awhile. Picked this unit up off flea-bay for $250. New old stock, but not so old that it doesn't use 134a. Has an evaporator and a blower and even a heater core.

So, all I gotta do is tee off the lines from the compressor, high and low; tee off the rear heater lines, rig up a blower switch, and BAM! I'm driving a refrigerator in the summer Memphis sun; right? Also toasty warm in the way back in the winter.

Am I missing anything?

I was thinking about mounting it to the ceiling as far back as I can, but it looks like it might fit behind the side panel in the cargo area. Plus the condensate drain hole would be on the bottom if mounted that way. If I put it on the ceiling, I'd need to figure out that.

Anybody know where I can get tee fittings for A/C lines?

Is that really the best advice I'm gonna get from the Iron Pig Preservation Society???

Take it to the shop???

What's so bad about having a shop make your lines. Figure out where and how you're going to mount it, then have them make the lines, unless you have the right equipment to crimp the fittings.

If you figure it out, then I might do the same! :D

this is pretty much standard for a project like this, there will be plenty of fab work for you and your pig, but without the flaring and crimping tools, or access to them and knowledge to drive them, you kinda need to farm that part out. get evrything else done, take measurments with lengths of heater hose or garden hose making sure you don't have kinks, get the clocking for the fitting dialed in and marked, then go to napa or where ever nearby that does hydraulic hoses and have them source and crimp/swedge ends on for you. or you could order the correct fittings and some barrier hose and again, go pay a guy with the tools to make the final connection.:meh: and do keep up on this, as a decent solution to PIG A/C is very much needed. Carry on...
 
I was poking fun at my fellow pig herders.

I figured I'd find more of that pioneer spirit where someone describes to me how to crimp barrier hose with some vice grips and a 3lb sledge. Or how "we don't need no stinking crimped fittings", use some brass barbed fittings and put the torque-zilla on the hose clamps.

I'm going to take it to a conversion van place to get some guidance/parts.


The internet tells me Vann-Air, Inc. is out of business, but looks to be made for Dodge.

Pulled the protective plastic caps off the end of the hose fittings. I think it may be already charged with 134.

I'll update as I progress.

pioneer spirit is alive and well here, just no sense in using a hammer to skin a deer...when we don't have the tech, we should be willing to acknowledge it. PIGism 101: know your limitations. you don't want to blow your refrigerant load cause of a fubbared home brew hose connection, do you?

PS: I actually tried the propane thing on my 1977 Porsche 911.
Tried crimping my own lines too.
The end result was a loud bang followed by a giant fireball rolling out from underneath my car while at a stoplight.

:lol:the 62 has a load of refrigeration grade hydrocarbons in ti right now:doh:. it works!

I have a rear AC in My Pig, I will try to get some pics posted this weekend.

The low pressure side is T's betweed the compressor and the front evaporator, the high pressure side is T's between the receiver/dryer and the front evaporator. The AC system was a dealer install back in the day, at least the front was, not sure about the rear. ritht now the rear blows cold but I think i need to replace the expansion valve for the front.
 
i know of three or four shops that could make those lines up for you, but you'd have to move to denver:flipoff2:
 
So here are a couple of shots of my rear A\C set-up. The unit is mounted in the right rear area, and the lines run along the frame rail. One of these days I would like to go with FJ60/62 front seats and have this unit incorporated into a center console with vents blowing to the back seat.
