Quick FJ62 auto trans removal question (edit: removal steps/list)

Good thread, considering tackling this myself based on what I'm seeing here. Have dropped 3 other transmissions but never an AT. I have a sucky HF scissor trans jack that looks like it would crumple under the weight of the A440F. Which HF jack did you buy?
I just used a borrowed old “sucky” HF scissor trans jack yesterday for the A440 and xfer case, worked fine. Needed to jack up the truck pretty high tho to get the bell housing to clear the frame rails to get it out from underneath the truck (as previously mentioned).

Good to hear. Will save me some $ in not buying a new jack for this job. Did you need to stabilize it with blocks of wood, use a second jack for the transfer case, etc?

No, I just placed it a little toward the passenger side and as far back against the crossmember as I could. I used a piece of 2x6 on the jack just to distribute load on the pan though, probably not necessary.

Thanks for all this info. Have the highlights printed out, along with the FSM removal pages. Just came from Harbor Freight now. Got the 800 lb trans jack and a pair of ramps. Gonna start this project in about 15 minutes. As soon a I stop procrastinating. Bought a used auto trans from a '90 FJ62 (He's doing the manual conversion). Gonna swap his automatic with my toasted one in my '89. Hopefully buy myself a couple more years before I can do a manual or LS swap. I'll let you know if i come across anything weird.

And… done. Took me all day solo with a break for dinner. Literally followed the list and checked things off as I went. Dropped down easy. Getting it out from under was another story. My floor jack didn’t go close to high enough. Had to cut up a 2x6 and stack it 4 high to barely wiggle the trans and TC out. Maybe a lower profile trans jack and/or a non low profile floor jack would have made it perfect.

It's not bad it just unbolts and falls out. make sure to remove the torque converter bolts before the bellhousing bolts and separate it from the flexplate before dropping the transmission so you don't ruin the converter for the next guy
Hey Matt,

How does that ruin the torque converter for the next guy? I am replacing my tranny and t-case with a different one and I already separated the transmission from the engine (the torque converter is still attached to the engine) , did I mess the torque converter up?

Not necessarily - but it's a bad idea it because you risk essentially hanging a 3-400 lb drivetrain off the internals of the converter if it doesn't come out perfectly straight. Even momentarily it is not designed for that

For posterity’s sake, I’ll list the items that need to be removed/released in order to pull the automatic transmission and transfer case out of an FJ62. I never found a “list” on Mud, but did use a few tips from others that made my removal much easier and damage free. Hopefully this is useful for someone else down the road....

Keep in mind, I did this based on the auto trans NOT going back in, I’m converting to a 5 speed manual, and this was my first transmission drop so may or may not be the most efficient way, but it worked for me...and nothin’ broke! :hillbilly:

Not entirely in order, but you get the idea, YMMV....
- disconnect battery
- drain transmission and transfer case
- remove F & R driveshafts
- remove trans cooler lines and associated brackets (good riddance!!)
- remove starter ( +cable, ground strap, small connector)
- remove trans dipstick tube (two bolts, one connection is the upper BH bolt, so maybe do this later)
- disconnect speedo cable and ground strap at back of transfer case
- disconnect trans kick down cable from the throttle cam
- disconnect the two soft lines going to tcase vacuum shift module
- remove tcase shift lever pin/cotter pin, remove large pivot nut, remove shifter boot/cover screws inside, wiggle tcase shift lever off and out. Good idea to soak the big shifter pivot ahead of time with penetrating oil.
- Remove both front seats, center console, and front carpet. I removed the pain in the a$$ lower heater duct, but realized it’s not necessary.
- remove plastic cover on transmission shifter and remove shifter pivot nut on d-side, let linkage fall through floor
- remove trans hump cover...
....***this is a good time to separate the O2 sensor connection that runs over the top of the transmission, the O2 sensor wiring can get ripped apart when the trans drops. Careful these wires are still not trapped under the shift linkage, mine were.
- remove two inspection covers on lower BH, remove 6 flexplate/flywheel bolts through driver side inspec. cover to separate from torque converter, use a large flat blade screwdriver to advance the flex plate through lower cover to reach each bolt.
- disconnect the 3-4 electrical connectors from main wiring harness (I did this after dropping it, but made sure there was plenty of slack in wires and nothing was going to get ripped apart)
- position the jack under the trans pan, run a ratchet strap around trans and jack plate, the jack is about to hold EVERYTHING.
- remove the 8 large BH bolts, top 2 bolts are longer
- Remove the 8 crossmember to frame bolts. I left the crossmember attached to trans in order to have a large handle to control things if needed, and put a floor jack under the heavier passenger side.
- start to wiggle things loose and backwards and lower the jack. Done.
- enjoy victory beer:beer::beer:

Didn’t really need the floor jack under the heavy side, the HF jack is pretty stout, but was solo and didn’t want that thing flopping over.
Also I didn’t jack up the truck (yet), the OME suspension gave me plenty of room to work and liked not having things so high, much easier to work on. The truck will have to be jacked up significantly to get the trans chunk and jack out from under it.

Man what a great post. Was just reviewing the FSM for removal of the transmission and transfer and it says “remove and install as shown” on that picture of basically the entire transmission in pieces. I was hoping for a bit more detail! Thanks again from Temple, Texas.

Wow…cool. Glad this actually helped someone. A good transmission jack makes a world of difference in this endeavor for the regular guy on his back in a garage doing this.
** If you are re-using the torque converter be careful, there is a nose cone/bearing cup (?) on it that inserts into the crank (like a pilot bearing). At some point after removal, my TC fell out and broke off this bearing cup. Mine was not going back in so it didn’t matter, otherwise it looks pretty important to re-installation.

Thanks for the tip. I’m pulling the engine, tranny and transfer out the front (Lord willing). New hi compression 3FE from Man-A-Fre and H55 and new transfer w 5th overdrive coming from @cruisermatt. Drive shafts from Tom Woods. Plan is to lift everything and push the car out from under it. I watched @BenjaminCA from project wrong way tip over the hoist with the engine on it when he was scooting his around and don’t want to be there. I’ll still use your advice to get the engine and tranny separated though. Gotta send the core back to Man-A-Fre.

The trick is do the opposite of anything I do… 😆

Not true. Things I’ve learned from Project Wrong Way:
1. Bending and flaring brake lines is doable
2. Not to push my hoisted engine
3. Never wear short shorts on a video
4. Don’t grab #&$@ on camera or I will be filming by myself for awhile!

I appreciate your efforts. Got the engine out today with my reluctant wife!
