I run the Monte Carlo calipers on the back of Da'40 and they don't have a parking brake. As already mentioned the El Dorado Caddy calipers do have the parking brake. I've heard lots of noise about using those, but I've never seen documentation of somebody actually doing it.

I seem to recall that many of the rear disk brakes use a drum type setup for the parking brake. I think the inside of the rotor hat is used. It would be cool to see if a late model LC/4Runner/Sequoia setup would work.

Like you said there seems to be a lot of people who know it has a parking brake, but I never seen that set up completed with a functional parking brake.

They do use a drum type parking brake. If I have a couple minutes free at work I want to see what is in stock and see if the idea looks even possible. I am thinking it is. Parking brake on axle, rear disk, and from Toyota that would be sweet.

If I get everything from the backing plate to the wheel shouldn't I be able to splice the cable between that and my normal parking brake handle, or I might need to go to a lever, which is no biggie.

Looked at the backing plates American had in today, nothing 4x4 related, but had a new tundra one which was HUGE! I am thinking I want to get something similar in size to what everyone is putting on with the chevy calipers and rotors. Maybe a little bigger.
 
I narrowed my selection down to only one brake that will work, that is a FJ Cruiser/ Gen 4 4Runner. They are the only vehicle that we could find that has rear disk, on a semi-float, with a six lug pattern. Onur and I ordered one today and it should be in the next couple of days, so I will take a look once its in. Thats about it in that area. I will break apart my rear axle next week I think to test fit. Pictures of progress once the parts in.
 
Well my backing plate came in and it looks like it might be a possible fit! Its a hefty sucker. Unlike front backing plates this one holds the caliper and the parking brake. I didn't snag any dimensions of where the holes go, but I can do that tomorrow. I took a gander at the rear axle housing on the forty which is a 6 bolt set up, but it appears that the four bolt FJ Cruiser might line up. If it looks possible I will pull out an inner axle shaft and take a look and attempt to bolt it up.

Also at work while stocking parts I came across the switch section, which has some super cool switches.

First being the rocker switches for power windows. I am not sure if I could use them in some kind of aux light or other application, but either way I thought they were cool.

The other one I found and took a picture was labeled AUX and at first I was thinking AUX tank, sweet! But it was really an AUX port for an IPod, still cool non the less and there are a vertical and horizontal type.

I also found the locker and diff lock switches, which are always cool. Oh and the seat warmer buttons which are also neat.

Playing around with what switches I would like to get to make up a little dash cluster to replace the stock radio slot. Lots of different options there to play with, also have to decide if I ever want to lock that vehicle because I would like to use the magic dial out of an 80.
 
4 bolt pattern? Ummm, that is what the mini-axles are. Anybody thinking what I'm think?

For the record I only stare at them and then right down the part number for future reference. :flipoff2:

Back to business though I lost a little hope today because the pattern looks a little funky now that I know the bolt hole pattern. The pattern isn't quite square; at first glance it appears like it should be, but after tracing the holes it is diffidently not square and here is some axle pictures to show it.

But, I did find this thread that gave a little guidance because I saw that an adapter can be made. This lead me back to Poser's brake brackets and they gave me the idea of making my adapter that way and get an extra long bolt for the caliper.

At this point I think I will need to tear down my rear axle, buy the backing plate, and figure this out! Next week is finals, so this project should be picking up soon. :)

You have a plasma and a welder. How difficult would it be to come up with something to make it work how you envision it?
 
Not that hard! Just need to get started after finals week.

Thought more about my parking brake. Still leaving most options open. (Off transfercase, FJ Cruiser, and other options)

For off transfercase. I found this website. Tolomatic, Inc. - Power Transmission - Mechanical Caliper Disc Brakes

They list their holding strengths of their calipers. I have no idea how much I need, so I found this website. Still need to figure out which formula to use. Engineering Inspiration - Brake System Design Calculations Unless someone knows how much force I need.

After that I expanded my search to custom parking brakes in general. Found these Chevy calipers that have the parking calipers incorporated, and they seem more hefty than the El Dorodo and other Chevy options. Plus there is a Seville in the junkyard, so I may just have to take a look. My understanding to why everyone uses the other calipers is they are "metric." Meaning they will take a stock toyota line? If thats the case I don't have a problem getting a custom line made up that goes from Toyota to Chevy. Disc Brake kit for Classic Cars and Trucks.
 
making new brake lines is easy. I redid all my ends to match the chevy axles I have. plus made all new lines for the front. no problem. you do want the fancy double flare tool though. I had 1 leaking and had to redo it as a double flare. now no leaks.
 
Took apart part of my rear axle this morning and discovered that if I want to get the bolt pattern for the FJ Cruiser brake to work I will need to either drill in the current axle mounting flange , or get a custom flange welded onto the end. I don't really like that option too much, but doable none the less.

So I googled more and found this. Its a company in OZ that works on 70 series mine trucks that have issues with their brakes wearing out too quickly do to the harsh conditions the vehicles work in. I am thinking about getting the transfer case mounted unit. This unit seems to be better designed than the All-Pro unit that several people have tried with limited success. Just found the price for the parking brake is around $1600! Yikes, so the quest for a parking brake continues on. Still some options to explore.

How about this... get an 80 series axle cut the ends off and attach them to your axle > full floater plus discs and parking brake. Get some longfields cut and some 80 series drive flanges and you in business! Only down side is the custom length axle but it would probably the only set you would need.

I have considered that to a certain degree, and there are some benefits to it for sure. It makes me hesitant to have a piece of my drivetrain modified to that extent, but at the same time that went out the window with the 1HZ.:hillbilly: I like the idea of being able to order in new parts within a couple of days, which would be the case, minus the shafts, which I shouldn't be breaking in the first place. As it has been said to me before I am building a Frankenstein cruiser. The only thing that will be non-modified or improved is the body. Maybe its time to find a spare 80 rear and 40 rear.

The other options that haven't been fully explored and I would like to do first, because they require less serious modifications.

1. Copy Hopper Stoppers design for the parking brake. It can't be that hard! And run Poser's rear disk.
2. Explore the option of the Seville calipers and their integrated parking brake and make brackets similar to Poser's.

Time for more research and exploring options, maybe custom rear end is the answer. Thoughts.

Will do. I am betting some time within the next week or so. Also going to build a carrier for the body, so I can work strictly with a rolling chassis.
